The winter is harsh to the young plants. The ground cover and mulch have increased the plant's resilience. The earth blanket used is made of comfrey and dried maize stalks. Dressing 👗 the earth serves multiple purposes:

It improves moisture retention for the soil

Soil temperature is regulated well

Weeds are suppressed

Increase in the soil fertility as the mulch break down

It attracts the beneficial micro organisms hence good soil biology

It cuts down on evaporation
