A worried, embarrassed pregnant patient says:
“Doc… I crave ice, chalk—even sand. Am I going crazy?”
No, you are not.😊
🧠 This is called pica — cravings for non-food items — and it’s common in pregnancy.
🔬 Why it happens:
• Often linked to iron deficiency (± zinc deficiency)
• Pregnancy increases nutritional demands → the brain misfires appetite signals
• Ice craving (pagophagia) is classically associated with iron-deficiency anemia
🚩 Why it matters:
• Eating non-food items can be harmful
• It’s a clue to an underlying deficiency, not a psychiatric problem
🩺 💡
“You’re not going crazy. This is your body asking for something it’s missing. We’ll check your iron and fix the cause.”
✨ Treat the deficiency → cravings usually fade.
