HOW TO SELECT A RESEARCH TOPIC: A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH

Choosing the right research topic is one of the most critical decisions in the dissertation or thesis process. A well-selected topic not only aligns with your academic interests but also contributes meaningfully to your field. To ensure you make an informed choice, consider these five essential principles when evaluating potential research ideas.

1. Originality of Topic
Originality is the cornerstone of impactful research. Your topic should address a clear research gap, offering new insights or a unique methodological approach. Ask yourself:
-What specific problem or gap does my research aim to fill?
-Does my topic provide a fresh perspective or challenge existing knowledge?
-Is my methodological approach distinct from prior studies?
-A topic with strong originality will stand out in the academic community and enhance the value of your work.

2. Value and Significance
The importance of your research topic cannot be overstated. Evaluate its significance by considering:
-Why is this research question worth exploring?
-Who will benefit from the findings, and how?
-What broader implications does the study have for the field or society?
-A well-justified topic lays the foundation for a compelling and persuasive research proposal.

3. Access to Data
Practical feasibility is key to a successful research project. Assess whether you can obtain the necessary data by asking:
-Can I access the required sample (e.g., participants, archival materials)?
-Are there financial or logistical barriers to data collection?
-Do I need special permissions or ethical approvals?
-Ensure your topic aligns with the resources and data available to you to avoid unnecessary hurdles.

4. Time Requirements and Implications
A realistic timeline is essential for completing your research efficiently. Consider:
-How long will each phase (literature review, data collection, analysis, writing) take?
-Are there seasonal or external constraints (e.g., fieldwork windows)?
-Have I accounted for potential delays or setbacks?
-A well-scoped topic with a feasible timeline increases the likelihood of timely completion.

5. Ethical Compliance
Adhering to ethical guidelines is non-negotiable. Evaluate your topic for potential ethical concerns, especially if it involves:
-Human or animal subjects
-Sensitive or confidential data
-Environmental impact
-Ensure your research design complies with institutional ethics policies to uphold integrity and social responsibility.

By systematically applying these five principles, originality, value, data access, time management, and ethics, you can select a research topic that is both academically rigorous and practically achievable. A thoughtful approach at this stage sets the stage for a successful and impactful research journey.

WEBINAR RECAP: DR. EMMANUEL MUKAMBO INSPIRES THE NEXT GENERATION OF AFRICAN RESEARCHERS.

Dr. Emmanuel Mukambo delivered a compelling presentation that focused on the critical importance of research in Africa, particularly for students and early-career professionals. He opened by highlighting the mismatch between Africa’s high disease burden and its low research output. According to Dr. Mukambo, this gap presents a serious challenge to the continent’s ability to generate context-relevant evidence for shaping healthcare policy. He encouraged participants to reflect on their views of research and recognize its role not only in improving health outcomes but also in empowering local communities. For Dr. Mukambo, research is not a distant academic exercise but a necessary tool for building resilient, evidence-driven health systems.

Beyond its societal importance, Dr. Mukambo emphasized the personal and professional benefits of engaging in research. He explained that students who actively pursue research stand out in competitive fields like medicine and public health. Research experience demonstrates initiative, analytical ability, and leadership—qualities that are increasingly valued by academic institutions, employers, and international partners. Dr. Mukambo shared how his own research journey opened unexpected doors, including job offers and collaborations, simply because he had made himself visible in the research community. He encouraged students to publish, present at conferences, and seek feedback, stressing that visibility and a well-developed research identity can significantly enhance one’s career prospects.

To make research more approachable, Dr. Mukambo advised participants to start with what they have and where they are. He shared his early experience with writing a case report, explaining how that simple project eventually led to bigger opportunities. He reassured attendees that it’s normal to feel uncertain at the beginning.

SUCCESSFULLY HELD A REMARKABLE WEBINAR ON GLOBAL HEALTH ELECTIVES WITH CFHI.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Child Family Health International (CFHI) for hosting an incredibly insightful and inspiring International Global Health Electives Online Session. The webinar was not only a success but also a powerful learning experience for all participants.

Led by Mariah Blevins, CFHI’s Program Coordinator, the session brought together students, professionals, and global health enthusiasts to explore meaningful opportunities in global health education. We were honored to hear from Dr. Jessica Evert, CFHI’s Global Medical Director, who provided a compelling overview of CFHI’s 32-year legacy in advancing health equity and ethical global engagement.

The session featured valuable insights from Gonzalo Claure, CFHI’s local coordinator in La Paz, Bolivia. He shared Bolivia’s remarkable progress in reducing under-five mortality through universal healthcare, community health workers, and social protection programs. His presentation illustrated the real-world impact of community-centered approaches in public health.

We also had the privilege of hearing from Emmanuel Phiri, a CFHI alumnus, who shared his personal experience and how CFHI’s programs have shaped his career in global health. Emmanuel encouraged participants to take full advantage of CFHI’s offerings and to approach global health with humility, openness, and curiosity.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, and participants were encouraged to subscribe to CFHI’s newsletter for the latest updates on upcoming programs, scholarship opportunities, and application tips.

Once again, we thank CFHI for partnering with us and making this session possible.

Let’s continue to work together toward a healthier, more equitable world—one elective at a time.
