An impaction refers to a condition where a tooth is unable to fully erupt into its normal position in the mouth due to obstruction by another tooth, dense bone, or soft tissue. This is most commonly seen with wisdom teeth (third molars) but can also occur with other teeth.
Types of Impactions:
1. Soft Tissue Impaction – The tooth is covered by gum tissue.
2. Partial Bony Impaction – Part of the tooth is covered by bone.
3. Complete Bony Impaction – The tooth is entirely trapped within the jawbone.
4. Horizontal or Angular Impaction – The tooth is tilted or growing in the wrong direction.
Can Removal Take Up to 5 Hours?
Yes, in rare and complex cases, an impacted tooth can take several hours to remove. Factors that can make extraction longer include:
Deep bony impaction (if the tooth is deeply embedded in the jawbone).
Close proximity to nerves (especially the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw).
Tooth position (horizontal or inverted impactions can be harder to remove).
Thick, dense bone (which requires more effort to remove the tooth).
Multiple impactions (removing multiple impacted teeth in one procedure can take longer).
Surgical complications (excessive bleeding, difficulty accessing the tooth, or needing to cut the tooth into sections).
In a straightforward case, an impacted wisdom tooth may take 30 minutes to an hour to remove. However, for more complex surgical extractions, especially full bony impactions, it can take up to 4-5 hours in extreme cases.
