Today we celebrate Kwanele Moyo, a dedicated development practitioner and a Friedrich Ebert Stiftung alumna, with over a decade of experience in civil society, driving youth empowerment and inclusive development initiatives.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Publishing and Media Studies, as well as a Master of Science Honours in Development Studies—an academic foundation that continues to inform her work at the intersection of research, policy, and community impact.

Kwanele has played a pivotal role in transforming the lives of hundreds of young people through her leadership in the Safe and Inclusive Cities (SAIC) Project, funded by Plan International Zimbabwe. Through this work, she has championed safer urban spaces and created opportunities for youth to actively participate in shaping their communities.

Beyond program implementation, Kwanele has contributed to critical knowledge production in Zimbabwe’s development space. She is a contributor to research publications such as Assessment of the Informal Economy in Zimbabwe and Youth Active Citizenship for Decent Jobs, helping to shape conversations around youth inclusion, economic participation, and policy development.

Her work reflects a deep commitment to empowering young people not only as beneficiaries, but as active agents of change—leaders capable of influencing systems and redefining their futures.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate Kwanele Moyo for her leadership, intellect, and dedication to building inclusive, youth-driven communities.

Her favourite quote: “Dwell on today's opportunity, not on yesterday's blunder.”

Today we celebrate Loveness Bepete, a young and innovative humanitarian worker passionate about youth economic empowerment 🌟. She's a proud Green Transition Officer for the TVET Solar Installation and House Wiring Program, funded by Plan International Zimbabwe, empowering scores of young men and women with solar installation and house wiring skills for a sustainable future.

As a champion of green transition, Loveness believes in creating opportunities for young people, especially women, to thrive in the energy sector.

With experience working with esteemed organizations like Plan International Zimbabwe , Lead Trust Zimbabwe, and Repssi Zimbabwe, Loveness has mentored young entrepreneurs, enabling them to start and grow successful green businesses. She's witnessed young women breaking stereotypes in male-dominated trades, earning decent incomes, and contributing to their communities.

Her work bridges the gap between social norms and economic opportunities, proving young people can drive positive change with the right skills and support.

Her favourite quote: "Empowering young women is not just a choice, it's a necessity for a brighter tomorrow" - Eleanor Roosevelt. She's lived by this mantra, driving change in different communities.

Throughout Women’s Month, we are profiling the dedicated women working at BVTO who bring our mission to life.

Debrah Mukasa is a dedicated activist in the informal sector and one of the founding members of the Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Organisation (BVTO). With over two decades of experience in civil society, having begun her journey in 2001, she has remained a consistent and courageous voice for vendors and marginalized communities.

Her advocacy is deeply rooted in lived experience, having worked as a vendor herself and understanding firsthand the realities, challenges, and resilience of those in the informal economy. Over the years, she has strengthened her impact through training in legal arbitration of vendor-related issues through the Zimbabwe Chamber of the Informal Economy Associations (ZCIEA/ZCTU contextually), as well as training in basic counselling, equipping her to support both the rights and wellbeing of the communities she serves.

Debrah has worked with organisations such as the Women’s Institute of Leadership Development and has been recognised by institutions including Emthonjeni Women’s Forum and ZIMCODD for her unwavering commitment to community advocacy and empowerment.

One of her most notable milestones came when she met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, representing the Matabeleland informal sector. This moment was not just symbolic, but a reflection of decades of persistent advocacy that carried the voices of vendors into national spaces of decision-making.

Beyond policy and representation, Debrah is passionate about shifting mindsets within the informal sector. She actively encourages vendors to invest in their health and wellness, challenging the norm of prioritising funeral contributions over living well and sustaining livelihoods.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate Debrah Mukasa for her resilience, leadership, and lifelong dedication to amplifying the voices of informal traders and building stronger, healthier communities.

Today, the Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Organization is conducting a Training of Trainers ( T o T ) on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) under the Safe and Inclusive Cities Project, funded by Plan International Zimbabwe - facilitated by ZNFPC

The objective is to train 10 peer educators from Mzilikazi and Pumula, who will then share this knowledge with 190 students enrolled in various skills training programs. The main objective of SRHR and CSE training is to equip youths with information, education, and life skills to adopt and maintain positive health behaviors, ultimately improving their sexual and reproductive health status.

The training aims to increase knowledge and utilization of integrated HIV prevention, SRHR, and SGBV services, focusing on out-of-school youths in communities. By empowering youths with accurate information, the project seeks to reduce teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, drug abuse, and gender-based violence.
