Behaviours Parents Often Miss
Good Morning Growing Minds Parents! 💛
Yesterday we looked at early signs. Today, let's chat about some common Autism behaviours that sometimes get overlooked or misunderstood. They're often "missed" because they can seem like normal quirks, but together, they tell us more about how a child experiences the world.
Keep an Eye Out For These:
🚗 Unique Play:
Plays with toys in a very specific way (e.g., lining up cars perfectly instead of rolling them).
Prefers playing alone, even with others nearby.
👂 Sensory Superpowers (or struggles!):
Too sensitive? Gets upset by loud noises, bright lights, certain clothes, or food textures.
Not sensitive enough? Doesn't seem to notice pain much, or constantly seeks out intense feelings like spinning or touching everything.
🔄 Love for Routine:
Gets really, really upset by small changes (e.g., a different breakfast, a new route to grandma's).
Insists on doing things in a very exact order.
😤 Big Reactions:
Meltdowns that are much more intense than a typical tantrum, especially when overwhelmed or frustrated. They can be hard to calm.
💡 Why it matters: These aren't "bad behaviours." They are clues to how your child's brain is wired and how they're trying to cope or communicate. Noticing them helps us understand and support them better!
