Behaviours Parents Often Miss
Good Morning Growing Minds Parents! 💛
Yesterday we looked at early signs. Today, let's chat about some common Autism behaviours that sometimes get overlooked or misunderstood. They're often "missed" because they can seem like normal quirks, but together, they tell us more about how a child experiences the world.
Keep an Eye Out For These:
🚗 Unique Play:
Plays with toys in a very specific way (e.g., lining up cars perfectly instead of rolling them).
Prefers playing alone, even with others nearby.
👂 Sensory Superpowers (or struggles!):
Too sensitive? Gets upset by loud noises, bright lights, certain clothes, or food textures.
Not sensitive enough? Doesn't seem to notice pain much, or constantly seeks out intense feelings like spinning or touching everything.
🔄 Love for Routine:
Gets really, really upset by small changes (e.g., a different breakfast, a new route to grandma's).
Insists on doing things in a very exact order.
😤 Big Reactions:
Meltdowns that are much more intense than a typical tantrum, especially when overwhelmed or frustrated. They can be hard to calm.
💡 Why it matters: These aren't "bad behaviours." They are clues to how your child's brain is wired and how they're trying to cope or communicate. Noticing them helps us understand and support them better!

Understanding Autism
Early Signs of Autism (0–3 Years)
Good Morning Growing Minds Parents! 💛
Yesterday, we learned that Autism is a unique way of experiencing the world. Today, let's talk about some early signs that might suggest a child could be on the Autism spectrum.

Remember, every child develops at their own pace, and these are just potential indicators. If you notice a few, it's a good idea to talk to a professional, not to worry, but to understand and support your child early.

Look out for these signs (0-3 years):
👶 Around 6-12 Months:
Doesn't babble or make eye contact by 9 months.
Doesn't respond to their name by 9-12 months.
Doesn't point, wave, or make gestures by 12 months.
Doesn't smile or show joyful expressions often.

🗣️ Around 12-24 Months:
Has very few words or no words by 16 months.
Doesn't combine two words (e.g., "more milk") by 24 months.
Loss of words or babbling they once had.
Doesn't imitate actions or sounds.
Prefers to play alone and doesn't seem interested in other children.

🧸 General Signs (can appear at any age 0-3):
Doesn't respond to their name consistently.
Has repetitive behaviours like hand-flapping, spinning, or rocking (stimming).
Unusual reactions to sounds, smells, textures (e.g., bothered by certain clothes, fascinated by lights).
Doesn't engage in pretend play (e.g., feeding a doll).
Doesn't point to show you things they are interested in.
Remember: Early recognition means early support, which can make a big difference! If you have concerns, trust your instincts and seek guidance.

👉 PARENT QUESTION: What's one developmental milestone you were excited to see your child reach?

Good Morning Growing Minds Parents! 💛
Let's start our week with an important topic.

Today, we're talking about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

✨ What is Autism?

Think of Autism not as a disease, but as a different way the brain is wired.

It means a person processes information, interacts with others, and experiences the world in a unique way.

It’s called a "Spectrum" because it affects every person differently. Some children need a lot of support, and others need just a little.

Autism mainly affects two areas:

1. Communication and Social Skills:
* Difficulty understanding *unspoken* rules (like body language).
* May struggle to make eye contact.
* May prefer to play alone.

2. Repetitive or Restricted Behaviours/Interests:
They might have a very strong focus on one topic (like dinosaurs or cars).
They might use repetitive movements (like hand-flapping or spinning) called "stimming" to manage big feelings.
They love routines
