How IVF Can Lead to Twinsโ Chiremba Vangu
When we do IVF โ in vitro fertilization โ we take eggs from your body and fertilize them with s***m in the lab. After the fertilized eggs grow into embryos, we place one or more of them back into your womb.
Now, this is where the chance of twins comes in:
1. If we transfer more than one embryo (which we sometimes do to increase your chances of pregnancy), thereโs a chance that both embryos can grow โ leading to fraternal twins (two babies, each from a different embryo).
2. Even if we transfer just one embryo, that embryo can sometimes naturally split into two โ like identical twins โ and that also leads to a twin pregnancy.
To summarize
If we put in two embryos and both take โ twins.
If we put in one embryo and it splits โ twins again.
Thatโs why twin pregnancies are more common with IVF compared to natural pregnancies. We always discuss how many embryos to transfer, because twin pregnancies can carry more risks, and we want the safest outcome for both mother and baby.
