The FDA authorized the first pill, Paxlovid, to treat . How does it work? This image provides a better way to digest.

Paxlovid blocks the ability of some of the proteins to function, resulting in a defective virus. After the infects cells, it replicates its RNA , turns that RNA into proteins and assembles proteins into new viruses (virions).

During the RNA to protein step, some proteins are first strung together but need to be freed from one another in order to do their job.

The 'molecular scissor' that frees up these proteins is called a . If these proteins aren't separated from each other by the protease, the virus can't replicate. Paxlovid grabs the protease and neutralizes it and stops the virus from replicating.
