The broadcast was carried out by Lee de Forest, the American inventor and pioneer of radio technology. Using a phonograph record, he transmitted a selection of music into the airwaves, an experiment both modest in scale and revolutionary in implication. Though the transmission reached only about fifty listeners scattered across a distance of nearly 800km, it marked a quiet but historic moment: sound, detached from physical presence, traveling vast distances to unseen audiences.
