Today we proudly celebrate the life and achievements of Prof C Chetsanga born 22 August 1935. We believe for any organization or country to move forward there should be sense of pride in the common past and understanding the past is significant to shape up the future. Instilling nation's history contributes to the creation and strengthening of nationalism and national identity and there is no better way of doing that, than telling your own story.
History reminds us how we came to know what we know; this helps our present and future generations the ability to spot (and appreciate) the legacies and mistakes they may have inherited. For any nation, history is a springboard for future findings and advancements. The coming weeks we embark on a journey to celebrate the lives of great achievers and pioneers of our medical history in Zimbabwe

We begin our journey with DR SIPHO LEONARD VIVIAN ZWANA, who was one on the pioneer black doctors in Zimbabwe. He qualified as a medical doctor in 1960 from Natal Medical School becoming the first Ndebele to qualify as a Medical Doctor, became the first black doctor to work at Mpilo and later on becoming the first black Zimbabwean Anaesthetists. Past medical superintendent for both Parirenyatwa and UBH Hospitals. He retired in 2013 after 52 years as a medical practitioner. Sadly, he died in February 2019 RIP forever remembered

DID YOU KNOW?

MPILO CENTRAL HOSPITAL in Bulawayo was completed and opened in1958

The hospital was designed to provide specialist services for the western and southern parts of Rhodesia, which had a population of almost two million people and during its first 14 years it developed into a sophisticated centre serving mainly the African population of Matabeleland and the neighbouring countries as well as providing some specialized radiology, ophthalmic services, radiotherapy, and radioisotope studies for all races.

Interestingly back then there was already heavy usage of the casualty services due to the large number of assaults and, to a lesser extent, road traffic and industrial accidents in this area.
One-fifth of all hospital admissions were for trauma, according to an article by . F. GRAVE F.R.C.S. (Senior Surgeon Mpilo Hospital) "The general surgeons dealt with about 300 admissions for head injury annually. These were particularly numerous because of the predilection of the Matabele people for the knobkerry as a mode of settling an argument."
