Nursing is not just a career; it is a calling. For Karen Wheaton that calling has been answered with unwavering dedication, compassion, and grace for an incredible many years. Fifty years of service. Think about that. When Karen first stepped onto the floor, technology was minimal, uniforms were crisp white, and the pace was intense. Over five decades, she has lived through countless changes in medicine, yet through every shift, one thing remained constant, her commitment to her patients.

One of the most remarkable things about Karen is that she hasn’t just worked in this organization; she has been a part of its very fabric. She has worn many hats at HGMC as a LVN, RN, bedside nurse, charge nurse, nursing supervisor, manager, ICU Nurse and mentor. In each position, she didn't just fulfill her duties—she elevated them. She taught us that a nurse’s tools are not just medicine and machines; they are a comforting hand, a listening ear, and a calm presence in the midst of fear.

There are stories that define a career. For Karen, it’s not just the big saves or the emergency crises. It’s the quiet moments, the times she stayed past her shift to comfort a frightened family member, or the way she taught new nurses that being a good nurse means treating the person, not just the disease. Karen, you are the epitome of "compassionate care." You have shown us all that even in the toughest moments of this profession, empathy is never a sign of weakness—it is our greatest strength.

Please know that your legacy is not just in the records or the patient charts. It is engraved in the lives you have touched, the colleagues you have mentored, and the standard of excellence you have set for all of us. You have already given 50 years to this organization and continuing to give more. Thank you, for your heart, your hard work, and your half-century of service. Please join us in celebrating Karen’s 50 years of dedicated service.

A calm space can support more restful sleep and overall well-being. Minor adjustments, such as keeping your room cool and dim, choosing soothing colors, limiting screen time before bed, and selecting supportive bedding, can help create an environment that encourages relaxation.

Quality sleep is an essential part of caring for your health.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women globally, yet it remains understudied, underdiagnosed, and undertreated in women. It’s the silent epidemic. While we often associate heart attacks with crushing chest pain, women’s symptoms can be subtle and atypical—including overwhelming fatigue, nausea, jaw pain, or shortness of breath. Tragically, these symptoms are often dismissed or overlooked, leading to delayed treatment and worse outcomes.
It’s time for a new paradigm; awareness is action. 48 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular disease, yet many do not realize they are at risk.
Know Your Numbers: Prevention starts with knowing your blood pressure, LDL ("bad") and cholesterol levels.
Unique Risk Factors: Pregnancy complications like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes and early menopause are significant, often unrecognized, risk factors for future cardiovascular disease.
Prevention at Every Age: Lifestyle changes such as a healthy balanced diet, consistent physical activity, and smoking cessation can significantly reduce risk.

As professionals in health and wellness, we must encourage women to be proactive, advocate for themselves, and not wait for a "classic" heart attack symptom to seek help. Let’s bridge the gap in cardiovascular care by ensuring women’s hearts are seen, heard, and protected.

Burn injuries can happen quickly when skin comes into contact with hot objects such as cookware, tools, hot pavement, or heating devices. Children are especially vulnerable, making supervision and prevention essential in everyday environments.

To help reduce the risk of burns:
• Always supervise children around hot objects and liquids
• Turn off heating pads and electric blankets before sleeping
• Have hot pads or long oven mitts ready when cooking
• Always assume pots and pans are hot

For minor burns:
• Cool the burn with running water for at least five minutes
• Remove jewelry and clothing near the burn
• Cover loosely with a clean cloth or gauze
• Seek medical attention if pain persists or a fever develops

Awareness, preparation, and quick response can help prevent complications and support proper healing.
