Abscesses can be painful for horses. These are the signs that may indicate your horse has an abscess and that you should contact a farrier.
Swelling: There may be visible swelling around the coronary band or lower leg.
Heat: The affected hoof often feels warmer than the others.
Discharge: Once the abscess bursts, you may see a black or brown discharge, either at the coronary band, sole, or frog.
Digital Pulse: Your trainer or vet can take a digital pulse, so if you suspect an abscess, ask someone at your stable.
Lameness: The most common sign is sudden, severe lameness, often in one hoof. The horse may avoid putting weight on the affected leg because it HURTS.
Sensitivity: The horse may be sensitive to pressure on the hoof, especially when using a hoof tester (which can tell us where the pain and abscess is located).
Increased Pulse: You might feel an increased digital pulse in the affected limb.
