Phototoxicity & Essential Oils
Some citrus oils can cause skin irritation when exposed to sunlight or UV light—this is called phototoxicity. It can lead to redness, swelling,
🧴 How to stay safe:
*Dilute well – Use 1 drop of oil per tsp of carrier oil (1%).
*Avoid sun – No sun exposure for 12–24 hrs after applying to skin.
*Know your oils – Distilled versions are usually safer!
✅ Non-phototoxic:
-Distilled: Lime (Citrus aurantifolia), Lemon (Citrus limon)
-Cold-pressed: Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis), Mandarin (Citrus reticulata), Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)
