The four D’s – dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death are possible results of a severe deficiency of niacin (vitamin B3). Also known as pellagra, severe niacin deficiency is rarely seen today.

An interesting fact involves its name. Originally known only as nicotinic acid, the name was changed in the 1940s. When nicotinic acid was added to enriched flour along with other B vitamins and iron, many people mistakenly believed to***co was added to the bread after seeing nicotinic acid on the label. So, to avoid confusion the Food and Nutrition Board changed the name to niacin, a derivative of NIcotinic ACid + vitamIN.
