Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are two chemical exfoliants that are commonly found in skin care products and can help remove dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin.
AHAs, which are chemical exfoliants that dissolve in water, work on the skin's surface to smooth out fine lines and visible wrinkles. They can also enhance skin texture and tone, unblock and cleanse pores, and can improve overall skin condition. Glycolic, citric, tartaric, lactic, malic and mandelic acids are some of the most popular AHAs.
BHAs, on the other hand, are oil-soluble chemical exfoliants. They operate on the epidermis and can pe*****te the pores deeper. They can lessen skin inflammation and eliminate acne. The two most popular kinds of BHA are citric acid and salicylic acid.
AHAs & BHAs should be applied in very less concentration.
Even though both of these acids help smooth out the skin's overall texture, layering them could be too harsh for your skin and lead to serious rashes, acne, hyperpigmentation, and other skin problems. As a precautionary measure, space out the application of these two products by at least a few days or a week.
Both AHAs & BHAs can be used day or night. But make sure that you don’t overuse an AHA product. Instead, use it once every other day. BHAs, however, are safe for daily use. Be sure to use sunscreen afterward as exfoliation leaves the skin more susceptible to UV damage.
[Note: A product that contains both AHA and BHA is relatively safe to use on all skin types because it contains a balanced percentage of both acids.]
