Breakfast -

Eating breakfast is an important first step in healthy eating throughout the day. For a person on a diabetic diet of about 1,800 calories, breakfast should include three sources of carbohydrates, or about 45 grams; one meat or meat substitute; and one fat. A sample breakfast may consist of a 1-ounce egg white omelet with mushrooms and green peppers, two slices of wheat toast with a tablespoon of trans fat-free margarine and a cup of skim milk. For those who prefer a cold breakfast, try 6 ounces of plain, low-fat yogurt topped with a cup of fresh blueberries and an ounce of slivered almonds.

Lunch

Planning ahead for lunch may help people who are on the go during the day or have busy work schedules ensure they eat a healthful meal. Lunch should consist of four servings of carbohydrates, or roughly 60 grams, two meat exchanges, two vegetables and two fats. For example, a grilled cheese sandwich prepared on whole-wheat bread, 1 1/4 cups of cubed watermelon and a glass of skim milk make for a filling and healthful lunch. Pair it with a small side salad with low-fat dressing to round out the meal. Another option is one-half cup of chicken salad with sliced tomatoes, lettuce and other veggies of your choice, packed in a whole-wheat pita pocket and paired with 10 baked potato chips and a small apple.

Dinner

Round out the day with a balanced dinner consisting, again, of four carbohydrate servings, two vegetable servings, two fats and three meat exchanges. Baked salmon provides a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids; a 3-ounce portion alongside two-thirds of a cup of wild rice, a cup of steamed green beans, a cup of skim milk and a half cup of unsweetened apple sauce for dessert makes for a filling and diabetic-friendly dinner option. Vegetarians may enjoy 1 ½ cups of meatless chili made with kidney beans and sautéed vegetables spooned over a small baked potato with a side of steamed broccoli.

Snacks

Ideal snacks for diabetics on an 1,800-calorie diet consist of a combination of one serving each of protein and carbohydrate. An example may include a tablespoon of peanut butter or other nut butter spread on three squares of graham crackers. Or try a half cup of low-fat cottage cheese with a half cup of peaches canned in their own juices. You could also make a trail mix with small pretzel twists, raisins and almonds. A serving size would be about a third of a cup. Throughout the day, water and other calorie-free beverages can be consumed as free foods, which are foods that can be eaten without concern for them affecting blood glucose levels.

How to Increase Muscle Mass and Decrease Body Fat Percentage

Body composition means what percentage of your total weight is from fat and what is from fat-free mass, consisting of muscle, bone, blood and other fluids. The American College of Sports Medicine publishes categories of body-fat percentage for adult men and women. You can reduce body fat by losing weight, and add in exercise to build muscle. For example, a man with 19 percent body fat can work out with weights, change up daily nutrition to eat fewer calories than expended from daily life and exercise, and gradually and safely reduce body fat to 15 percent, considered "athletic" body composition.

Step 1

Measure your body fat by using the calipers to take skin-fold measurements, then comparing the total with published tables. Make a note on the calendar.

Step 2

Measure the circumference of your waist, hips, upper arm, thigh, calf and chest. Write down all measurements on the calendar.

Step 3

Spend 30 minutes or more every day doing some form of exercise that you enjoy. Good choices are biking, walking, swimming, gardening, and playing in the park with your kids or your dog. Remember to warm up for a few minutes beforehand.

Step 4

Eat well. This can be the most difficult part of changing your body composition. Use the calendar to write down what you eat, and watch portion sizes. You do not have to eliminate a food you love, however, try to eat smaller portions.

Step 5

Weigh yourself after one week. If you have lost 1 or 2 lbs., your exercise and daily activities are burning more calories than you eat. Continue on this plan. If you have not lost weight, or have gained weight, you need to eat fewer calories and exercise another 10 to 15 minutes daily.

Step 6

Weigh yourself again after the second week. You should be losing 1 to 2 pounds per week. You must adjust your exercise level and food intake to obtain this rate of weight loss in order to lose fat and build or maintain muscle mass.

Step 7

At the end of four to six weeks of consecutive weight loss, repeat the caliper and circumference measurements. Record your progress on the calendar. Congratulations, you are now increasing your muscle mass while losing body fat!

At age 40 our growth hormone production is only 40% of what we produced at age 20. The fall in IGF-1 levels with age is identical to the decline of growth hormone.

Criteria of diagnosing metabolic syndrome -

1) Waist in inches more than 35
2) Low HDL in men below 40 and in women below 50
3) High Triglycerides more then 150
4) Fasting blood sugar more than 100
5) High blood pressure more than 130/85

Risk factors -

• Age - Your risk of metabolic syndrome increases with age.
• Race - In the United States, Mexican-Americans appear to be at the greatest risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
• Obesity - Carrying too much weight, especially in your abdomen, increases your risk of metabolic syndrome.
