Why do CHD families matter to speech therapists?

♥️ Language disorders are one of the primary and earliest emerging neurodevelopmental issues in children with CHD

♥️ School-aged heart warriors are more likely to show deficits in learning, attention, social skills, executive functioning and memory, organization, and motor functioning than their peers, often requiring additional support in school.

♥️ Feeding is often adversely affected in children with CHD before and after surgical intervention

Early intervention by a speech therapist with a specific interest and knowledge of CHD may benefit heart warriors in the long-term!

Children with hyperlexia shows a keen interest in letters and numbers at a younger age than expected. They are often able to read before age 5 but struggles with understanding of language and expressing themselves.

Although able to name number names and alphabet letters, they struggle to use those concepts to comment or request in meaningful intentional communication 🔢

📚Shared book reading should be fun.

📚 If we force kids to engage with books early on and they have negative experiences, we could turn them off from books on the long term.

📚 10% of typically developing children don’t enjoy being read to and another study that looked at children with language impairments found that number jumped to 40%.

📚 My first goal in speech therapy is to increase positive interactions and experiences around books.
