Bowen is an amazing therapy that can be used to treat a huge range of conditions, both physical and emotional, anything from sports injuries to asthma to depression to long standing conditions and injuries that are difficult to resolve with other methods. Developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia, a treatment will consist of a series of gentle non intrusive moves on skin or through light clothing. A session usually lasts up to an hour and frequently results in a deep sense of relaxation helping the body to recharge and balance itself. The technique is based on the theory that gentle moves over precise points of the body can prompt the body’s innate ability to relieve pain, restriction and imbalance without the need for deep, manipulative or forceful treatment. Bowen Therapy stimulates the body to heal itself, often profoundly. It is a holistic approach to pain relief and healing that is based on the recognition that the underlying cause or source of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health or pain problems can be found in the form of an imbalance of the energetic and fascial systems of the body. The average number of treatments people have is three to four. There are always exceptions to any rule, and some people will need further or even on-going treatment. Bowen is not that well known yet amongst the general public, but it's being used more and more by elite sports men and women, from Olympic athletes to premier league footballers. Not only do sportsmen report fewer injuries when treated regularly but they also notice enhanced performance. Back and neck pain would be one of the most common presentations and one that tends to respond very quickly. Other conditions that are consistently resolved include: frozen shoulder, sciatica, tilted pelvis, knee pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, RSI, whiplash, asthma, bronchial complaints, allergies, ME, migraine, hay fever, painful or lumpy breasts, PMT, fertility problems, kidney problems, IBS, depression and fatigue, pain management and sports injuries. The list is exhaustive and there is no condition that would exclude a treatment. The Bowen Technique is being used effectively for athletes in a wide range of sports such as football, rugby, martial arts, professional dancers, running, motor sports, tennis, cycling, swimming and golf to name a few! Bowen is being used effectively by Rugby League Leeds Rhinos, Premier League football teams including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Aston Villa and various elite British athletes are amongst those to include Bowen as part of their training regime. If their body is in balance then athletes recognise, they have more stamina and sustain fewer injuries. They are also able to focus and control the stress response, and these factors all result in an improved performance. Here is what a few professional sportsmen and women had to say about their experience of Bowen therapy;
“I am approaching the later years of my career and Bowen has helped my body to recover quicker after games and intense training. It´s great”. Jamie Peacock Leeds Rhinos.
“Although sceptical prior to receiving Bowen treatment the effects have been nothing but positive. Following competition it is extremely effective at relieving the tension and improving recovery in the neck and upper back areas”. Matt Diskin Leeds Rhinos.
“I have been receiving treatment for around a year and the benefits from it have been that I feel relaxed mentally also more supple and I have a greater range of movement”. Lee Smith Leeds Rhinos.
“The quality of my training is better, with the same number of hours and level of training” explains GB triathlete Victoria Gill. When asked “What is Bowen therapy?” Triathlon coach Joe Beer said,
“I am not a practitioner but I do have this type of body work. It does not feel like rubbing muscles in a massage instead various muscle parts are lightly manipulated. It feels like little is happening until the therapist leaves the room (those used to massage think “where’s she going now?)… you lie there and “ping” muscles start to re-set. I walk out of the session floating on air, my body feels great and I have to say whilst I don’t need to know the science I do know it works for me and other athletes who have tried it.”
“Bowen greatly benefits my training and performance, providing me with regular Personal Bests”. Frankie Snare, 6th Women 25-29 Iron Man 2014.
“The positive results I experienced physically and mentally during my Bowen therapy surpassed my initial expectations. I’m a very sporty individual (semi-professional footballer) with a busy work schedule so to find a therapy that significantly reduced stress levels and improved my physical well being and performance was a first. I would typically use a sports masseuse but Bowen offers you so much more. I would certainly recommend a course of therapy, the positive results will be evident“. Ben Thompson.
