What is Sarcopenia?
Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. It usually begins around age 40 and can accelerate after 60 if nothing is done to prevent it. On average, women can lose up to 8% of their muscle every decade after midlife.
---
Why Do We Lose Muscle?
Several factors contribute to sarcopenia:
1️⃣ Hormonal changes – Estrogen and growth hormone decline with age, slowing muscle repair and growth.
2️⃣ Inactivity – Sedentary lifestyles mean muscles aren’t being challenged, so they shrink.
3️⃣ Nutrition – Many women don’t get enough protein or essential nutrients to support muscle health.
4️⃣ Nerve changes – The nerves that activate muscle fibers decline with age, leading to fewer active muscle fibers.
5️⃣ Chronic stress & inflammation – These can increase muscle breakdown over time.
---
Why Is Muscle Loss a Problem?
Weaker muscles → higher risk of falls & fractures
Slower metabolism → easier weight gain
Reduced bone density → risk of osteoporosis
Loss of independence → harder to perform daily tasks
---
How Do We Fix It?
✅ Strength Training: Lifting weights is the most effective way to maintain and build muscle at any age.
✅ Protein Intake: Aim for protein at every meal to fuel muscle repair (lean meats, fish, dairy, legumes).
✅ Active Lifestyle: Walking, climbing stairs, and staying mobile daily.
✅ Recovery & Sleep: Muscles rebuild during rest.
✅ Vitamin D & Resistance Work: Essential for bone and muscle health.
