🌟🧠🤝Triggered by a terrifying event that you may have witnessed or experienced, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition caused by a reaction to extreme stressors. It is normal to experience temporary difficulty adjusting and coping after a traumatic event. Your body’s “fight-or-flight” reaction helps it defend against danger or to avoid it. The fear that triggers these split-second changes protects us, and we naturally recover from these initial symptoms.
Along with this, people who have PTSD often find it difficult to concentrate and develop problems with sleep, all of which become persistent, and severe and interfere with your day-to-day functioning.

We, at Cambridge Medical Centre, understand the struggles arising from mental health conditions and continually work towards providing you with the treatment you may require. In the hope of being your safe space, we encourage you to reach out to us should you or anyone you know be suffering from PTSD.

Post16
🧘‍♂️❤️📈Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Here are some first hints that you might be suffering from OCD:

Checking: Repeatedly checking locks, appliances, or switches to ensure they are secure or turned off.
Contamination: Excessive fear of germs or dirt, leading to excessive hand washing or cleaning.
Orderliness: A need for things to be symmetrical or in a specific order, leading to time-consuming arranging or organizing.
Hoarding: Difficulty discarding items because of a fear of needing them in the future or attaching excessive value to them.
When to Seek Help
Persistent Symptoms: If these thoughts and behaviors persist for more than an hour a day and significantly interfere with your life.
Distress and Impairment: When the distress caused by these symptoms impairs your ability to function normally in daily activities.
Next Steps
Consult a Professional: If you suspect you have OCD, consider consulting a mental health professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Therapy Options: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), is effective in treating OCD.
Medication: In some cases, medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can be prescribed to help manage symptoms.
Recognizing the early signs of OCD and seeking timely help can lead to effective management and improvement in quality of life.

🌟🧠🤝Psychoeducational assessments at Cambridge Medical Center

What is a psychoeducational assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment involves a standardized assessment of a child's intellectual and academic abilities. It is administered by a psychologist or psychometrist and combined with clinical interviews, observations, and historical records to help understand how your child learns, and identify if and how they're struggling. It measures overall aptitude and academic achievement around core skills, such as reading, writing and math. It involves a number of techniques, including pencil and paper activities, verbal responses, and the evaluation of motor skills (e.g., drawing, and playing with blocks). The assessment varies based on a child's age.

The results can help the psychologist understand your child's potential (i.e. if they are gifted or have a learning disability) and provide strategies to support them. During these assessments, other concerns are also evaluated, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or anxiety, and recommendations for your child are based on a combination of standardized test results and the evaluation of psychosocial and/or mental health issues.

How do I know if my child needs one?

Typically, your child's school will suggest a psychoeducational assessment if they notice that they are falling behind their peers. Sometimes, a teacher will bring it up with you directly. You may also notice signs that your child is struggling with reading, writing or math and want to take action. Learning difficulties are usually noticed around age six or seven, but it can happen earlier or later.

At other times, your child's therapist might suggest a more in-depth analysis of your child's cognitive abilities or executive function skills if difficulties or issues about these skills arise
