WARNING: Side Effects of Pilates
As you progress through a Pilates program, you will notice five major “side effects” of regular participation. These impacts are the fundamental benefits of Pilates, and essentially the results we are striving for with each movement.
1. Uniform Development: Pilates exercises are designed to condition ALL of your muscles to become equally strong and flexible. Each movement is working to align your body back to its natural architectural state, reversing some of the unbalanced movement and rest patterns we fall into daily. As your muscles begin to strengthen in a uniform way (including all of the smaller supporting muscles), you will notice your body can move through space with more grace and ease.
2. Proper Breathing: Part of the Pilates method involves breathing in completely and exhaling fully. A full inhale draws in the maximum amount of oxygen into your lungs, and a complete exhale expels out as much carbon dioxide and toxins as possible. In Pilates each movement is linked to a particular breathing pattern, and the movement with breath assists in making your inhale and exhale more effective. As you practice this “complete breathing” you will notice benefits such as increased muscle functioning, mental focus, and overall stamina and endurance.
3. Robust Circulation: As you develop proper breathing, your full inhale and exhale allows more oxygen to circulate through your bloodstream. Pilates movements themselves also create space and give this increased blood flow more access to all areas of your body. Increased circulation ultimately provides more nourishment to reach your muscles, joints, and organs, which will help them function optimally.
4. Flexible and De-compressed Spine and Joints: Pilates works to both strengthen and lengthen your muscles, helping them better support your structure and joints so you can lift rather than sink into them. There is a huge focus on spinal articulation and lengthening throughout the movements, which helps your spine get back to it’s natural decompressed state. As your spine and joints decompress and become more supple, related aches and pain will decrease (i.e. lower back pain, the leading cause of disability in the world).
5. Unity of Mind, Body, and Spirit: Awareness is a beautiful thing to cultivate in oneself. By simply noticing what is happening in our bodies and minds, we can begin to have the power to influence them. You will notice that in Pilates you are required to fully pay attention to what is happening in your body — there is little time to day-dream. This mind-body connection will not only give you a better idea of what’s happening internally, it will help you gain control so you can make the necessary changes in how you move and hold yourself.
The effects of Pilates are subtle at first, but once they start it’s hard to imagine life before you reaped the benefits. You realize that you have more control over how you feel on a day-to-day basis than you may have realized, and all it takes is regular participation to keep up this feeling of health and well-being.
