INTERVIEW WITH ALL STAR KEVIN O'CONNOR
FG: What was the tipping point that brought you into network marketing?
Kevin O’Connor: I was introduced to a company in the late 80s having never heard anything about network marketing before. The tipping point for me was seeing homemakers, truck drivers and school teachers making more money than I had ever imagined making. They were wonderful people, but they didn’t seem to have anything that I didn’t have, so I concluded that if they could do it, it was possible for me too.
I think that’s one of the things I love most about this profession – it gives people from ordinary backgrounds a vehicle to unlock extraordinary potential. When you get to the heart of it, I think of the industry as being more about empowerment than almost anything else.
FG: Were there any lessons learned on the way up that help you today in FGXpress?
Kevin O’Connor: One of the things I love particularly about FGXpress is the fact that the product itself is simplicity and so is the compensation plan. If you focus on a few rudimentary things (which for me means building your X-Tribe) and just repeat that obnoxiously [laughs out loud] over and over again, you have a real shot at success. Early in the business, I learned the hard way about the importance of following a simple pattern. I was struggling in my first company but I was always a “creative” type and decided that I could do a better job on the business presentation, so I rearranged the whole thing.
I was fortunate to be mentored by a guy who was making $7 million a year and he took me aside one day and gently said, “So, you’ve decided to reinvent the wheel. I’m making $7 million. How much are you making? I’ve already laid it all out for you so why don’t you just follow what works?” That was an eye-opening moment for me on daily actions that produce results. For me it was about embracing simplicity and not reinventing the wheel.
FG: Can you recall what went through your mind when you knew you’d made All Star?
Kevin O’Connor: It’s a funny thing. It’s a great achievement, but my first reflection was that I won’t be satisfied until other leaders in my group and throughout the company advance to that position as well. Somebody was joking with me and said, “I’m going to get there in less time than you did, O’Connor,” but part of me hopes they were serious. If you want a real retirement plan in network marketing, it’s not about your own numbers. It’s about your team. It’s only sustainable if they’re moving into their own leadership ability and taking THEIR team through the ranks to 3, 4, 5 Star and beyond.
The real reward is watching people on my team start to break through to the upper ranks of the company. That’s when you know you’ve got a sustainable organization.
FG: Do you have any advice for people who are just starting out?
Kevin O’Connor: The first thing I’d say is don’t worry about “All Star.” It’s an organic progression. Sure, if you’ve got years of experience and teams that come with you, you can move with certainty and maybe with greater speed, but my wish for the company is to see the upper ranks occupied by people who are like I was when I first started out. I couldn’t see making $5,000 or $10,000 until I made my first $1,000 – then that $5,000 seemed MAYBE possible. Then I couldn’t see the $10,000 until I got to that $5,000.
Quite frankly, what begins to happen when you start breaking into that kind of income, you suddenly start to think, “You know what? Maybe there IS no limit to this. Maybe I AM destined to make $20,000 or $30,000 or even $40,000 a month.” It’s much easier to imagine the bigger results once you have had a taste of those smaller victories along the way.
So my thinking is that it’s great to set a goal of going All Star, but the only way to get there is by developing that daily habit of focusing on your team and getting your X-Tribe bonus. All Star may appear daunting in the beginning, but it starts to take on a momentum of its own through those incremental daily work habits. My thinking is that if you’re just starting out, focus on four people getting their X-Tribe bonus. That opens up the compensation plan, then teach your people to do the same. When the income starts to roll in, get two more people in and help THEM get their X-Tribe bonus.
Keep doing that and you’ll wake up one day and ask yourself how you got to 3 Star! You get there by repeating that basic activity. Each rank is nothing more than the replication of the one before it.
FG: How do you keep yourself on track when you run into obstacles?
Kevin O’Connor: In a practical sense there’s an infinite variety of things you can do to get yourself back on track. It took me years to get there, but the moment I learned not to take any of it personally made a big difference in my mental approach to the business. Sometimes people quit or maybe your income isn’t moving as fast as you thought it would. All these things are exercising your discipline and mental muscle. They’re preparing you for leadership.
The thing is, if you give up in the face of any of that, you’ll never reach your true potential. I do things like take a break or go for a walk. I love to work out to clear my head. The most important lesson that I learned goes back to the mentor I mentioned earlier. He said once, and this may have originally come from Earl Nightingale, that every obstacle contains an equivalent benefit. And if that’s the truth, then I say bring as many obstacles on me as quick as you can, so I can start mining them for the benefits!
I think that’s absolutely the case in network marketing, if you think about it. When a new person comes in and they see people they can relate to advancing through the ranks it gives them hope. It’s like a map for success. It’s proof that somebody could do it and it gives them the certainty that they can do it too. That’s why rank advancement and making a big deal of it is really important.
My feeling is that recognition isn’t part of the business – it IS the business. That is what drives and sustains people through those “grinds” that they might encounter.
FG: Any final thoughts you’d like to share?
Kevin O’Connor: I really want to acknowledge everyone on my team because this is their victory too. Without your team, you’re a NO STAR. There is nothing without them and the key, quite frankly, to climbing the ranks is just creating a path for yourself and your team. I’m blessed to have so many amazing leaders all over the world who are doing just that and creating a path for THEIR people.
That’s why I know that it’s just a matter of time before I’m joined at the All Star level by many of these phenomenal leaders from all over. What I love about that is that you want them saying “I can get there” rather than looking at Brad and Marcia or me and thinking “oh, that’s just for them.” You want them saying “it’s for ME,” and the proof of that is seeing more people joining each rank on the way up.
When I think about the paramount importance of acknowledging others in this business, I’m always reminded of Mary Kay’s wise observation that people may not remember what you said but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. That’s why we threw the party in Las Vegas. Certainly it was a celebration, but it was mainly there so that we could make memories together and to let people know that they’re special and an indispensible part of a team… and a special company.
For me, one of the most important ingredients, particularly in FGXpress, is the ingredient of passion. Of course we have to have things like focus and discipline, but it’s passion that will carry you through the obstacles. The actions we take with this product have repercussions into the future in so many people’s lives… in their health, mental attitude and financial potential.
Erase yourself from the equation – the lives you’ve touched by this product because you had the courage to say something to them – and all that goes away. So, I’m passionate about the idea that together, what we’re really doing is creating a massive wave of energy and wellness and prosperity. There are a lot of great products out there, but I don’t think there’s any other company that can say they’ve touched lives in over 160 countries in 13 months. So I want everybody to really take it to heart that we’re the caretakers of something extremely special and we should act accordingly every day.
