It seems almost too good to be true: by playing certain types of video games, you can actually improve learning and memory. New work presented at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society annual meeting shows that these types of games can boost working memory in 8- to 11-year-old children.
Scientists from the Medical Research Council in the UK used magnetoencephalography to measure progress after 20 half-hour training sessions in eight games. Half of the children played games that remained at the same level of difficulty, while the other half played games that got harder as the children improved. The researchers discovered that children in the latter group showed significant changes to connectivity between frontoparietal networks and the lateral occipital complex and inferior temporal cortex.
