Many foods parents think are healthy can increase cavity risk — especially for young kids. Early education and prevention make all the difference for growing smiles 🦷✨
1. Processed foods 🍪
Try to reduce processed foods, as they often contain hidden sugars and ingredients that are harmful to teeth.
2. Drinks matter 🥛💧
Water is the safest drink for teeth. Avoid or limit flavoured milks and fruit juices, which can increase cavity risk.
3. Snacking frequency 🍎🧀
The more often teeth are exposed to snacks, the higher the risk of cavities. Aim to limit snacking between meals — ideally no more than two snacks per day. Always offer water afterwards.
Tooth-friendly snack options include fruit, cheese, breadsticks, and plain yoghurt (with no added sugar).
4. Bedtime milk 🌙🍼
Bedtime milk is one of the major causes of tooth decay in young children. Never allow a child to fall asleep while drinking milk. Try to wean infants off the bottle by 12 months, and always brush your child’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste before bed.
5. Regular dental visits 🏥😁
Bring your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears and continue with 6-monthly check-ups and cleanings. Fluoride applications can begin from age 3. Early visits help detect and prevent cavities before they progress.
