🌸 Iron Deficiency in Pregnancy 🌸
Did you know that low iron is one of the most common concerns for expecting mums? 🤰💭
Here are some signs to look out for:
✨ Constant tiredness or fatigue
✨ Pale skin or lips
✨ Dizziness or lightheadedness
✨ Shortness of breath
✨ Headaches
✨ Unusual cravings (like ice or clay)

💡 If you notice these symptoms, always consult your doctor or midwife. A simple blood test can help—and treatment makes a big difference for both mum and baby. ❤️

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, honor the children and families affected, and support research.

🌟What to Know About Childhood Cancer
While childhood cancer is rare compared to adult cancers, it is still the leading cause of death by disease for children under 14. Here are some key facts:

▶Globally, over 300,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year.
▶The most common types of childhood cancers are leukemias, brain and other central nervous system tumors, and lymphomas.
▶Survival rates have improved dramatically over the past several decades. In high-income countries, more than 80% of children with cancer are cured, but there is a significant disparity in low-income countries where cure rates can be much lower.
▶Unfortunately, many childhood cancer survivors will experience chronic health conditions later in life as a result of their diagnosis and treatment.
▶Childhood cancer research is often underfunded compared to adult cancer research.

Skin-to-skin contact, often called "kangaroo care," is a powerful practice where a newborn, dressed only in a nappy (diaper), is placed directly on a parent's bare chest. This simple act offers profound benefits for both baby and parent.

✳️Benefits for Newborns:
1) Temperature Regulation: Skin-to-skin contact aids in stabilizing the newborn's body temperature, as the parent's body acts as a natural thermoregulator.

2) Physiological Stability: It helps stabilize the baby's heart rate, breathing, and blood oxygen levels.

3)Reduced Stress: Direct contact leads to lower stress hormone levels in the infant, resulting in less crying and increased periods of calm sleep.

4) Breastfeeding Promotion: It stimulates natural feeding instincts, encourages rooting, and facilitates a successful first latch, contributing to increased duration of breastfeeding.

5) Immune System Support: Exposure to the parent's beneficial bacteria through skin contact aids in colonizing the baby's gut microbiome, which can support immune development.

6) Enhanced Development: Sensory input from touch is critical for optimal brain development and improved neurodevelopmental outcomes, particularly in premature infants.

7) Pain Reduction: Skin-to-skin contact has been shown to reduce pain responses during minor medical procedures.

🌟Benefits for Parents:
1) Enhanced Bonding
2) Increased Confidence
3) Milk Supply Support
4) Reduced Parental Stress
5) Improved Communication

Skin-to-skin contact is recommended immediately after birth, including following C-sections, and can be continued regularly throughout the postnatal period.

Hot weather weekends can be particularly challenging for elderly parents, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. The key is to prioritize their comfort, hydration, and safety while still making the weekend enjoyable.

Here's how to make elderly parents happy during hot weather weekends:

💥Indoor Activities: Facilitate movies, TV shows, board games, card games, puzzles, reading, audiobooks, crafts, or music.

💥Reminiscence: Looking at old photo albums can be comforting and mentally stimulating.

💥Shaded Outdoor Time: Limit any outdoor time to early morning or late evening in full shade, with constant hydration.

💥Light Meals: Serve salads, sandwiches, cold soups, and fresh fruit.

💥Social Connection: Regular visits, assistance with phone/video calls to friends/family, and genuine conversations about their day contribute to well-being.

💥Practical Help: Offer to run errands or prepare cool meals to reduce their physical exertion.

❤️‍🩹Signs Your Home Care Nurse is Exhausted❤️‍🩹

▶Mood Changes: They seem more irritable, withdrawn, less empathetic, or overwhelmed.

▶Physical Signs: They look constantly tired, disheveled, complain of frequent minor illnesses, or have unusual aches.

▶Performance Issues: You notice decreased attention to detail, rushing tasks, forgetfulness, or a loss of interest in their usual activities or conversations.

▶Increased Absences: More frequent sick days or lateness.

🆘How You Can Help

1) Approach Gently: Ask "You seem tired, is everything okay?"

2) Show Appreciation: A simple "thank you" can mean a lot.

3) Contact Agency: If they're with an agency, discreetly inform the supervisor about your concerns for their well-being.

🌻Weaning your baby? Avoid these common mistakes:

1) Starting Too Early/Late: Wait until around 6 months when they show readiness signs; don't start before 4 months or delay too long.

2) Ignoring Cues: Don't force food or miss signs they're full. Let them lead.

3) Rushing It: Take it slow; weaning is a gradual process.

4) Limited Variety: Offer lots of different tastes (savory, bitter) and textures (mashed, lumpy, finger foods) early on, not just sweet purees.

5) Distractions: Keep mealtimes focused and positive – no screens or toys.

6) Not Eating Together: Include baby in family meals so they can learn by watching.

7) Mess Phobia: Let them explore food with their hands; mess is part of learning.

8) Bad Highchair: Ensure they're well-supported with a footrest for safe eating.

9) Up Quickly: It takes many tries for a baby to accept new foods.

10) Unsafe Foods: Avoid salt, added sugar, honey (under 1), whole nuts, and choking hazards (like whole grapes).

By avoiding these, you'll make weaning a positive experience for everyone!😋🍎🥕🍠🍗🍖🌽🥦
