My presentation, Supporting Students with Speech, Language, and Communication Needs in the Classroom: Creating an Inclusive and Accessible Classroom Environment, explored key strategies for fostering supportive and accessible learning spaces that empower all students.

👇🏻Here are some tips to help your child/student develop their reading skills

📕Aided Guided Reading Boards: Use picture boards, sentence creation boards, or written word boards to support understanding and expression during guided reading activities.

📗Core Vocabulary: Incorporate core vocabulary words like “turn page,” “read more,” “repeat,” “I like it,” and “I don’t like it” to manage the story and encourage active participation.

📘Question and Answer: Integrate a question-and-answer segment into guided reading sessions to work on wh-questions and allow students to express their opinions and feelings about the story

It’s time for a little reintroduction! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m Heleen van der Merwe and the Head of Speech Therapy at the Rashid Centre for People of Determination in Dubai, I’m on a mission to empower through communication. Originally from South Africa, I embarked on this incredible journey after graduating from the University of Stellenbosch in 2012. Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working in various settings across South Africa, Qatar, and now Dubai, where I’ve called home for almost 8 years.

🗣️My decision to become a was deeply personal. As a myself, I understand firsthand the challenges and triumphs of finding one’s voice. That’s why my passion burns bright for helping others navigate similar paths. With years of experience and expertise in speech sound disorders, language delays, and swallowing disorders, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

🗣️ I have a passion for working with children 🌈 There’s something truly magical about unlocking their inner voice and watching them blossom into confident communicators . I firmly believe in , and together, we can make that a reality.

So here’s to embracing our unique voices, celebrating our journeys, and spreading kindness every step of the way.
