Acidity or Gallstones? 🤷‍♀️ Common Confusion in Women

Many women struggle to tell if their pain is from acidity or gallstones. Here's how we differentiate:

🔥 Acidity

Burning sensation in the chest or upper abdomen

Reflux after meals

Sour taste in the mouth

🪨 Gallstones (Biliary Colic)

Sudden, sharp pain in the upper abdomen

Often after heavy, oily meals

Pain may radiate to the back or right side

May cause vomiting (not just reflux)

Sometimes severe enough to need hospital pain relief

✅ Best Test: Ultrasound of the abdomen – quick and sensitive for detecting gallstones.

Understanding your symptoms helps in getting the right treatment. Don’t ignore persistent pain!

“Can women have groin hernia”
Yes women can also have groin hernia. They can be inguinal or femoral hernia. It can come due to pregnancy, doing heavy gymn, or any activity that increases the pressure in the abdomen. The groin Hernias can be safely repaired laparoscopically.

Central midline Hernias with diastasis can be repaired laparoscopically. This surgery is planned after the completion of family. It involves a reconstruction of the abdominal wall muscles and a mesh placement. It needs expertise to do it will keyholes without a large scar.

“Patient of liver disease with Ascitis having hernia”
This is a complex situation and requires the attention of the hernia expert along with the team of liver doctors. They have to assess the risk and sometimes help to dry the Ascitis and then do the surgery. Doing the surgery in elective circumstances has better results than waiting and having an emergency procedure.

“Can a lady have a hernia repair and have pregnancy again”
Hernia is formed due to the stretching of the abdominal wall muscles. It can be during pregnancy or due to some reason causing increased pressure on the abdominal wall. In young ladies, we can repair the hernia with a mesh and they can become pregnant again, but they have to give an interval of time to allow the abdominal wall muscles to heal properly.

“Should Mesh be placed in all case of hernia repair?”

Mesh is used to strengthen and improve the integrity of the tissue repair. It is the most important tool to prevent recurrence of the hernia. The quality of the meshes has improved a lot in the new era and they get integrated and become a part of the normal abdominal wall.

Dr Ritu Khare, was acknowledged for her contribution as a faculty in Gulf HPB conference. Her talk on microlithiasis in patients on Mounjaro was well received. She also mentored the younger generation of surgeons. The scientific paper under her supervision won the “Best Abstract Award” for her intern. She continues to provide her expertise in Laparoscopic gall bladder surgeries in the UAE.
