Uganda: Woman sentenced to six years in prison for refusing to marry the man who financed her studies

In Uganda, a court ruling delivered in Rukungiri District has sparked strong reactions following the sentencing of a young woman to six years in prison in a case combining personal relations and financial commitment. Fortunate Kyarikunda was found guilty by a local court after refusing to marry a businessman who claimed he had paid for her education in exchange for a promise of marriage.

According to evidence presented before the court, Richard Tumwine reportedly began financially supporting the young woman in 2015 while she was undertaking a teaching internship. Their relationship is said to have gradually developed, leading in 2018 to an agreement centered on marriage once she completed her studies.

After graduating, Kyarikunda ultimately declined the union, a decision the complainant viewed as a breach of commitment. The matter was then brought before the courts, which ruled that the agreement had been violated.

Since the verdict was announced, public reactions have continued to grow, with opinions divided between the defense of individual freedom and calls for respect of personal commitments, reflecting a broader debate within Ugandan society.

The Dark Side I Didn’t Know 😭

Chinedu and Obinna were brothers, bound by the same blood, struggles, and dreams. Following their father's demise, he bequeathed them a single inheritance: a small parcel of land situated behind the old family residence.

For years, they shared a mutual understanding to construct a joint project - a family home, a testament to their humble beginnings.

However, when Chinedu relocated to the city, his life underwent a transformation. He initially struggled, hawking on the streets, until he encountered a benefactor who elevated his status. In gratitude, he resolved to construct a residence in his hometown.

Chinedu contacted Obinna, his brother, and apprised him of the plan. Both parties concurred. Chinedu commenced dispatching funds home on a monthly basis, trusting Obinna to procure materials, supervise, and oversee the entire project.

Six months elapsed before Chinedu returned home, eager to behold the fruits of his labor. Nevertheless, from the moment he arrived, he sensed an aura of unease - the locals behaved strangely.

Upon finally arriving at the site, his heart sank. The gate bore the inscription: “OBINNA VILLA.” The property documents were in Obinna's name.

When Chinedu confronted him, Obinna retorted,

“Do you presume that wealth makes you the superior individual? I toiled as well! I merit it more than you!”

The altercation escalated, with neighbors gathering and exchanging irreparable words.

That day, Chinedu departed with tears in his eyes, uttering a solitary phrase:

“You may have usurped the land alone… but it will take time. The Almighty is cognizant of all.”

Years transpired. Obinna resided in opulence, boasting of his possessions. Nonetheless, the corrupting influences of nefarious friendships, pride, and avarice consumed him. He ultimately forfeited the land, the residence, and even the esteem of those who had formerly extolled him.

On a frigid night, destitute and homeless, Obinna knocked on the door of a grand mansion. When it opened, standing before him was Chinedu - older, more composed, and still blessed in abundance.

Obinna fell to his knees, overcome with remorse:

“Brother… I have destroyed everything. I am truly sorry.”

Chinedu regarded him quietly and declared:

“You did not merely destroy the land… you annihilated trust.

Yet, even shattered entities can be rebuilt.”

He assisted Obinna to his feet, embraced him, and offered him sustenance.

Experience of life!

"He left me while I was pregnant & moved to South Korea. Refusing to take responsibility, he instead pressured me to end the pregnancy.
He claimed he was still too young & wasn't ready to be a dad, saying the baby would distract him from his dreams.

His plan was to become wealthy before ever starting to think about having a family. I knew I couldn't do that to my child, so I refused. In response, he stopped picking up my calls & even blocked me on all social platforms. I couldn't find him anywhere until I met his close friend, who told me he had left the country for South Korea. My Stepmom consoled me, encouraged me, & asked me not to worry, assuring me that she'd take care of me. I was almost 6 months pregnant, it was now visible.

At this point, everyone in school had noticed, & it was the topic of the day, especially in my class. In fact, each time I passed a group of students, I could hear them whispering & laughing. Friends & classmates started to mock my situation. I'm a shy person, & i couldn't handle it anymore, so I left school.

A few months after I gave birth to twin boys, my Stepmom advised that I go back to school while she helped me look after my boys. Well, to cut a long story short, I went back to school, & now, guess what? I'm finally a graduate! A few months after graduation, a very big company called me to say my job application had been accepted. I went for the interview & was told I could start work on Monday.

Take a look at me now! I have 3 precious achievements to thank God for: a graduate degree, a lovely, cute sons, a well-paid job. This brings me exactly to my point that; Children are special gifts from God. And, I believe that my greatest blessings came through my son.

Sometimes, that baby you're carrying could just be your ticket to God's abundant blessings in your life. Also using this opportunity to thank my amazing Stepmom. Thank you so much, Mama 😭, I can never repay you enough. I love you so much. I promise to keep making you proud and happy! ❤️"
