πŸ’’ Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems.

It is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which produces a protein that regulates the movement of salt and water in and out of cells.

In individuals with CF, the CFTR protein is either missing or not functioning properly, leading to the production of thick, sticky mucus that clogs the airways and digestive tract.

This can result in chronic lung infections, digestive problems, and infertility.

Symptoms of CF may include a persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, poor growth and weight gain, frequent lung infections, and fatty stools.

While there is no cure for CF, there are treatments that can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
These may include medications to thin mucus and reduce inflammation, chest physical therapy to help clear the airways, and dietary changes to ensure adequate nutrition.

In some cases, lung transplantation may be necessary.
