in Afghanistan.
Thalassemia is an inherited Genetic blood disorder, which is caused by the mutation in a Gene that is responssible for the synthesis Hemoglobin protein.
The mutated gene can not code normal Hemoglobin protein and thus the abnormal Hemolobin protiens in RBC
are unable to carry Oxygen molecules to the different parts of body cells in thalassemia patients and thus they are suffering from a life long blood problem.
According to the available Data there are nearlly 5900 patients are registerd with National Blood Bank of Afghanistan.
Unfortunately more than 70% of them have Thalassemia Major, due which they are suffering from sever body pain, shortness of breathing and Hepato-spleenomagaly.
As a director of National Blood Bank, I would like to call on those healthy people to please try to donate your blood for saving the lives of these innocent children.
Best regards.
Dr Saif Pashtoon.
Director of National Blood Bank.
