Tooth #14 - Separated File Removal

So your root canal did not go as planned.
Don’t cry! Separated instruments happen to the best of us even endodontists. Studies by Crump and Natkin shows no difference in success rates if the file separate at the apex. However, if it separates in the middle or coronal 1/3 there could be issues to develop. These require removal or bypass of the instrument. I like to create a “stage” with a cut Size #3 GG to the tip of the file. Then use a small ultrasonic tip counter clockwise then pop out the separated file. This takes time, precision, and patience...
