Throughout North America and the Caribbean, February is recognized as Cancer Prevention Month.
Research has shown that nearly half of the deaths in the US can be attributed to preventable causes such as smoking, excess body weight, alcohol intake, poor diet, physical inactivity among others and it is projected that these causes would also be applicable to residents of Antigua and Barbuda.
As part of your preventative actions, one should begin to modify behaviors that can impact cancer occurrence and outcomes by quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, be selective in what you eat, along with other measures.
It should be noted that nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as many cases of head and neck cancers could be prevented by HPV vaccination, many cases of liver cancer could be prevented by HBV vaccination.
In Antigua and Barbuda, screening is done for COLON CANCER; BREAST CANCER AND CERVICAL CANCER. If you consider yourself to be in the high risk category then visit your doctor for a full examination.

SLBMC Lab will be suspending phlebotomy services (the drawing of blood for blood tests) for outpatients on Feb. 7th and 8th, 2024. This interruption in service will be for two days only. On Feb. 7— that's tomorrow—and Thursday Feb. 8.

Medical Laboratory Services recognizes the impact diabetes has on the general health of the public. Consequently, in recognition of World Diabetes Day Medical Lab takes this opportunity to encourage persons to get checked as diabetes is one of the comorbidities, which has a serious impact on the severity of COVID-19 on the infected.
So for the month of November, our laboratory will be offering HbA1c testing at a special fee of $75.00 per test. The HbA1c test measures your glucose level over a three month period and doesn’t require the need for fasting.
Medical Laboratory Services is now offering serological COVID-19 IgG antibodies testing, which provides you with the level of antibodies currently detected in your body. This information can be used by your physician to determine previous or recovering infections of pathogens as well as the successful immunization against COVID-19.
