The Learning & Development Unit is proud to open the year with two powerful CME sessions facilitated by Dr. Paul Saphier and Dr. Nicole Saphier today.

From acute stroke care and mechanical thrombectomy in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings, to breast cancer detection and outcomes in Antigua & Barbuda, today’s sessions are all about evidence, equity, and real-world impact.

This is what intentional learning looks like, bringing global expertise home, sharpening clinical decision-making, and keeping patient outcomes front and center. No fluff, just forward momentum 🚀

Huge thanks to our speakers and to every healthcare professional choosing growth in 2026. Let’s keep raising the bar.

House officers, registrars, and physician interns at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre were treated to a special luncheon today, as the institution paused to show appreciation for their dedication and tireless service.

The event recognized the critical role these young medical professionals play in the daily operation of the hospital, often serving on the front lines of patient care.

Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle Jarvis underscored their importance, noting that house officers, registrars, and interns form a vital part of the SLBMC’s healthcare delivery system. She praised their long hours, commitment to learning, and unwavering service to patients, describing them as essential to maintaining continuity and quality of care across the institution.

Dr. Belle Jarvis added that the luncheon was a small but meaningful gesture to acknowledge their hard work and to encourage them as they continue their professional journey within the public health system.

The initiative reflects the SLBMC’s ongoing commitment to staff morale, professional development, and fostering a supportive working environment for its medical team.

(Public Health Surveillance Confirms No Unusual Increase in Mosquito‑Borne Diseases)

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs advises the public that there is no outbreak or unusual increase in mosquito‑borne diseases in Antigua and Barbuda at this time.

The Ministry maintains continuous national surveillance for mosquito‑borne diseases, including Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, and Oropouche virus, through established public health monitoring systems. All indicators currently remain within expected baseline levels.

Dengue Fever, which is the most commonly detected mosquito‑borne disease locally, experienced increased activity in 2023. Surveillance data confirm that since that period, Dengue case numbers have returned to and remained within expected limits, with no cases recorded to date in 2026.

At the same time, surveillance of other mosquito‑borne diseases continues to show very low or no activity. Zika virus activity has been minimal, with only two cases identified in 2025 and none detected so far in 2026, while no cases of Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, or Oropouche virus have been recorded during this period.

Although there is no public health emergency, the Ministry emphasises that preventing mosquito‑borne diseases requires ongoing action and shared responsibility. Vector control activities, including routine inspections, larval source reduction, and targeted control measures, are continuously underway in communities. These efforts are supported by regular waste collection and environmental management, coordinated with the relevant national agencies.

Members of the public are encouraged to strengthen household prevention measures, including removing standing water, properly covering water storage containers, disposing of unwanted items responsibly, and cooperating with vector control teams during routine inspections.

The Ministry assures the public that public health surveillance operates continuously, and that any change in disease activity or risk will be communicated promptly through official channels.

The Ministry thanks the public for its cooperation and partnership in protecting the health of all residents of Antigua and Barbuda.
