JUST SMILE!!! There’s nothing quite like a smile for perking you up, as well as those around you. Smiling, laughing, and positive thinking have been shown to have a huge number of health benefits to both mind and body. When you laugh, your body releases endorphins. These are brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which make us feel happy. They are also a natural pain and stress reliever. Laughing reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and gives us a quick burst of energy. A good laugh can be beneficial to the lungs, boost immunity, and could even burn off calories. Smiley, happy people are thought to have more friends and be more successful, by appearing more confident and approachable. 'Simply using the same muscles as smiling will put you in a happier mood,' explains Dr Michael Lewis, psychologist at Cardiff University. 'That’s because use of those muscles is part of how the brain evaluates mood. 'Charles Darwin was one of the first to suggest our expressions may actually intensify our feelings. This theory is known as the ‘feedback loop’ or ‘facial feedback hypothesis’. A smiling expression feeds back into how we experience mood, therefore making us feel happier or a joke seem funnier. How to put a smile on your face? Spend time with friends and family who are most likely to cheer you up. Take time out and watch a film or a TV show you find funny. Even when you don’t feel like it, try and force yourself to smile – you may find that a forced smile becomes genuine.

Depression: There seems to be a great misconception that 1) men don't usually suffer from drepression and 2) depression is just something people need to get over and move on. Sadly, it has been in the news the past few days that legendary actor, comedian, Robin Williams died by su***de. As devastating as this must be for his family, friends, and fans, it is also a wake up call in the world of mental health. Men do suffer from depression and it it greatly underreported due to the socialized view that men should be men and not show emotion or speak of feelings. The fact is, men do attempt su***de and are usually more likely to die buy su***de than women because of the means they tend to use; such as fi****ms and hanging. Men also tend to deal with depression through the use of alcohol and other drugs. To all the men who read this and believe they may be suffering from depression, please seek professional help, and to all those who may know of a friend or family member who needs help, please encourage them to ask for it.

We all have our beliefs and thoughts. Some may be good, but some may be irrational ways of thinking. These irrational thoughts can often cause us distress in the way we feel and behave. It is not until these beliefs and thoughts are challenged and changed that we may start to feel better and change the way we approach life. Make no mistake, for most of us, changing our thoughts and beliefs that we have had most of our lives is no easy task. However, it is possible, it can be done, and like most things in life, it's a process and takes time. Enjoy your day everyone!

THE STIGMA OF THERAPY... I have practiced in Miami Fl, in Wolverhampton, England, and in Antigua. I have come to the realisation that it doesn't matter where you go, there is still a stigma against counselling. I have received comments such as "you must see a lot of crazy people" and "only women need to see a counsellor because men don't suffer from depression". I have had particular individuals make appointments up to three times and cancel due to the fear of being branded as crazy if they were to see a therapist. I am here to tell you RELAX AND TAKE A BREATH BECAUSE COUNSELLING IS FOR EVERYONE! Most of my clients have issues with life transitions, divorce, work stress, family stress, and health concerns. These all may lead to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Seeing a therapist is a great place to figure out and learn tools to cope with such issues to relieve these symptoms in a confidential, judgment free environment. Let's face it... we all have issues... we just sometimes need a little help and guidance to manage it all. Just like you need a doctor to help keep your body healthy, you may need a therapist to keep your mind healthy.

Good Morning All!! WHO ALL EXERCISED THIS MORNING? Psychology fact of the day!!!
Did you know that exercise was also good for your mood and helps reduce symptoms of depression? It’s a well-kept secret that people who exercise regularly also have lower risk of depression. Our pill-popping culture tends to emphasize medical interventions for psychological disorders over behavioral treatments. Exercise is one of these behavioral treatments. Aerobic exercise improves your mood by causing your body’s endorphins to kick in. These are the natural “feel good” neurotransmitters that start to exert their effects after about 20 minutes of training. These regular exercise-related boosts eventually improve your overall mental health over the long term.
