(AIDS Secretariat's โ€œTeen Talk Seminar: My Life, My Choicesโ€ hailed a resounding success)

The AIDS Secretariat, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, successfully hosted its โ€œTeen Talk Seminar: My Life, My Choicesโ€, engaging students from ten secondary schools across Antigua and Barbuda.

During the event, Minister of Health, Sir Molwyn M. Joseph, delivered a powerful address, urging students to use their willpower to abstain from risky behaviours, protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections, and seek guidance from trusted, knowledgeable individuals. He further encouraged the AIDS Secretariat to continue hosting informative and youth-centered educational sessions on an ongoing basis.

The seminar also featured motivational presentations and lectures from Dr. Margarethe Belle, Loretta Benjamin, Joy-Ann Harrigan, and Nikisha Smith. Remarks were delivered by CARICOM Youth Ambassador and Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador, Ms. Janet Simon.

Participants explored key topics such as: Understanding STIs, S*x and the Teenager, HIV and the Human Body, Self-Esteem and Media Literacy and Navigating Social Pressures.

The Teen Talk Seminar forms part of the AIDS Secretariatโ€™s 2025 World AIDS Day Week of Activities.
World AIDS Day will be officially observed on Monday, December 1st.

The week of activities will conclude on Sunday with the Grand Red Ribbon Day and Street Parade through St. Johnโ€™s.

(ARBOUR DAY 2025 HAILED A SUCCESS)

The Department of Environment successfully celebrated Arbour Day 2025 with island-wide activities promoting environmental awareness, sustainability, and youth engagement.

As part of this yearโ€™s celebrations, schools across Antigua and Barbuda received plants, plant bags, and healthy snacks, encouraging students to participate actively in conservation and home gardening.

In total, 25,000 plants were distributed, including 15,000 assorted fruit plants, 2,000 coconut trees, and additional varieties such as apple, grape, and citrus seedlings.

The event was attended by Junior Minister in the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Michael Joseph, who toured the displays, interacted with students, and participated in photo sessions with the children.

Students also visited educational stalls showcasing the work of the Plant Protection Unit, the Beekeeping Initiative, and the Solar Energy Exhibit, each demonstrating sustainable practices and innovations that support Antigua and Barbudaโ€™s environmental goals.

The Department of Environment extends appreciation to all participating schools, partners, and volunteers who contributed to another successful Arbour Day celebration, reinforcing the nationโ€™s commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience.

The presentation took place at SLBMC, where representatives from the hospital, CIBC Caribbean, and the Ministry of Health celebrated the partnership and its long-term impact on national healthcare.

๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ-๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€ expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing the life-changing reach of the donation.

โ€œCollaboration truly is priceless when it comes to meeting our mission as a hospital. In Antigua, we have more than 49,000 women who, at some point in their lives, will benefit from this new mammogram machine. And we must also remember our men who, though fewer in number, come to us with symptoms and will benefit as well.

What CIBC has done here today will touch lives not only now, but for generations to come. This is the real power of publicโ€“private partnership. If we want to transform healthcare in this country, we can only do it together.

On behalf of the hospital, and on behalf of every family whose loved one will be helped by this gift, we say thank you.โ€

Speaking on behalf of CIBC Caribbean, ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€-๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐˜€, ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ, ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ข๐—˜๐—–๐—ฆ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—”๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฎ, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—œ๐—•๐—– ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜ ๐—™๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, highlighted why the bank felt compelled to support the cause.

โ€œWhen the hospital approached us, we knew immediately that we had to respond in a meaningful way. Supporting this request aligns not only with our mission, but with our deep commitment to strengthening healthcare access for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Corporate social responsibility isnโ€™t a checkbox for usโ€”itโ€™s part of who we are. Here at home, the CIBC name has become closely tied to Walk for the Cure and to the wider fight against cancer, because we believe every community deserves the best chance at early detection and treatment.

We want to acknowledge the medical and administrative teams at SLBMC for the tireless, often unseen work they continue to do on the frontlines of cancer care. And we reaffirm CIBC Caribbeanโ€™s commitment to standing with youโ€”because when we collaborate, we strengthen not just systems, but lives.โ€

๐— ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต, ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€, ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—˜๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜„๐˜†๐—ป ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ต, also underscored the significance of the donation within the context of the nationโ€™s healthcare system.

โ€œHealthcare is a complex issue. Antigua and Barbuda made the decision many years ago that we would have socialized medicine and that no one should be left behind. When you adopt that policy, you also take on significant responsibilities and burdens. For example, the total assets of this hospital amount to roughly $25 millionโ€”and those assets must be maintained and eventually replaced. Your generosity today has helped to shoulder some of that burden.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, and myself, we extend our sincere and lasting gratitude for your generosity.โ€

๐—ฆ๐—Ÿ๐—•๐— ๐—– ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด & ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€, ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—–๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฝ, noted that CIBCโ€™s support is not newโ€”but its consistency and impact continue to deepen.

โ€œCIBC has been supporting the hospital for more than a decade, and theyโ€™ve become the kind of partners who always ask, โ€˜How can we help?โ€™ Their long-standing commitment to cancer care has made a real difference year after year.

We often remind those who give that countless worthy causes existโ€”yet they chose us. And for that we are truly grateful.

This year, our PINKparty campaign raised nearly $90,000โ€”the most weโ€™ve ever raisedโ€”with one goal in mind: purchasing a new mammogram machine. Today, because of CIBCโ€™s generosity, that goal becomes a reality.

A hospital is only as strong as the people who work within itโ€”and the people who believe in and support that work.โ€

The CIBC Walk for the Cure activities continue with Raffle for the Cure which will be drawn on November 30th, and the formal handover of funds raised during the Walk for the Cure campaign will take place on World Cancer Day, February 4, 2026.

The acquisition of the new mammogram machine will significantly enhance the hospital's mission of strengthening early detection and timely intervention for breast cancer. This is crucial as breast cancer accounts for a significant portion of cancer cases diagnosed among women in Antigua & Barbuda.
