Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association

Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association A dedicated support organization for patients with Sickle Cell Disorders and their families. ABSCA relies entirely on donations and fundraisers.

The Antigua & Barbuda Sickle Cell Association is constantly working to improve awareness of and knowledge about sickle cell disease. Some of our projects are: regular seminars for patients and families, the biennial National Sickle Cell Conference for both the general public and medical professionals, fundraisers and awareness projects. We have achieved implementation of newborn screening for Anti

gua and Barbuda in September 2020. We have established a Sheltered Workshop for patients who are unable to maintain work, due to their severe course of illness. We are still trying to operationalize a Sickle Cell Clinic, since treatment for painful crises should be delivered at specialized unit, where health care providers experienced in the treatment of Sickle Cell crises are able to help quickly and efficiently. Any help is sincerely appreciated. Donations can be made to our ECAB account. For more information:

Silk and Grace, an Antigua-based online business known for its unique fashion accessories, clothing, and gift selection options, has made a thoughtful contribution to our cause.

Founder and owner Nicolete Lewis donated a collection of custom-designed wristbands to raise awareness for Sickle Cell disease. The bands feature a clear and impactful message: “Know your Sickle Status – for your children’s sake.”

These eye-catching wristbands are available for purchase at Dr. Hadeed’s office for just 5 EC$. All proceeds will go directly towards supporting patients living with Sickle Cell.

Thank you, Nicolete!

UN representatives visit Sheltered Workshop

October 24th was UN Day, marking the UN’s 79th anniversary and Antigua and Barbuda’s 43rd anniversary of
UN membership.

This year’s theme is “Decent Work and Economic Growth’ and ‘Partnerships for the goals’. We were honoured to welcome representatives of the UN at the workshop, explain
the rationale behind this intervention and showcase our patients crafts.

We appreciate your interest and caring!

5th National Sickle Cell Conference

Our Sickle Cell Conference at AUA Conference Centre was very well-received, with a record attendance of about 80 and 65 participants on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Many thanks to AUA for hosting us, to our speakers, who put in a lot of time and effort to meticulously prepare their presentations, and to all the helping hands who made this weekend a success.

Several persons asked for a repeat of specific presentations for those who were unable to join us. We’ll see what we can do!

Our story

The Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association (ABSCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Sickle Cell patients and their families in as many ways as possible.

We are only a small group of patients, families, health care providers and supporters, but we make up for the lack in numbers with determination and devotion to the cause.

An important part of our work is improving awareness of and knowledge about the condition. Some of our projects are: regular seminars for patients and families, the biannual National Sickle Cell Conference for both general public and medical professionals, fundraisers and awareness projects.

Recently, we have achieved government approval for newborn screening and are working on its implementation. We have established a Sickle Cell Clinic – a work in progress, since we do not have the funds to operationalize the clinic yet. Our main focus at the moment is to source funding in order to staff the clinic. Treatment of painful crises should be delivered at specialized Sickle Cell clinics, where health care providers who are experienced in the treatment of Sickle Cell crises are able to help fast and efficiently.
