Independent Living & Assistive Technology 🦻🏽👨🦼👩🦯🧑🦽🩼🗣️⌨️
Lori Pogarian, MS, CCC-SLP, and Kelsey Lanman, MS, OTR/L (Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital), lead this month’s clinical instruction on independent living and assitive technology in the Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Fellowship. This week, Lori covered cognitive-linguistic testing, guidelines for referring patients to the speech-language pathologist, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA), and methods of evaluation for transitioning patients home and back into their community. Cognition, speech, and communication are vital to facilitating independence and functioning in patients recovering from traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.
Fun fact - the MOCA has been translated and validated in the Armenian language, and is commonly used by rehabilitation professionals in Armenia and Artsakh!
The Interidisciplinary Rehabilitation Fellowship at the National Institute of Health of Armenia is the first post-graduate rehabilitation education program in Armrenia. The program targets post-conflict and adult rehabilitaiton and is designed to sustainably build capacity in Armenia and Artsakh’s rehabilitaiton workforce.
Special thanks to IRF sponsors Armenian American Medical Society and the Glendale Memorial Hospital Medical Executive Committee for investing in the future of rehabilitation in Armenia and Artsakh.
