Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology

We are proud to announce that Artur Torosyan, Founder of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology and President of the Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People, has successfully completed the “ Medicine and ” 2024–2025 international training program, organized by the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), the Federation of Geriatric Education (FGE), and the Swiss Foundation for Medical e-Education (SFME).

His tuition fee was partially covered by the Federation of Geriatric Education, while the remaining part was funded personally.

🔰 The program included 32 distinguished experts from the world’s leading universities, representing fields such as geriatric medicine, social gerontology, geriatric psychiatry, and related medical sciences. Among them were:

- Prof. Mario Barbagallo, President of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG)
- Prof. Rosette Bonello, Deputy Director, United Nations International Institute on Ageing (Malta)
- Dr. Mohamed Shawky Khater, Professor of Geriatric Medicine, Ain Shams University (Cairo)
- Prof. Joël Belmin, Professor of Geriatrics, Sorbonne University (Paris)
- Prof. Jean-Pierre Michel, Geriatrician and Head of the Federation of Geriatric Education
- Dr. Abdulrazaq Abyad, Geriatrician, Dar Al Shifa Hospital (Kuwait),
and many other internationally recognized specialists.

🤝 Since 2016, Artur Torosyan’s efforts have been dedicated to improving the quality of life of older people in Armenia through systemic reforms and the development of geriatrics and gerontology. Over the years, the establishment of an international network of partners and access to high-quality education have created a strong foundation for building a modern, knowledge-based system in the country.

This achievement reflects his commitment to the Association’s mission—to train a new generation of professionals equipped with specialized skills and to advance geriatrics and gerontology, thereby improving the quality of life of older people in Armenia.

💪💪💪Tigran Chilingaryan, AAGG Board Member, had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at CHU Montpellier’s Department of Gerontology. This unique experience was made possible through the cooperation between the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the EuGMS - European Geriatric Medicine SocietyEuGMS - European Geriatric Medicine Society, within the COST action PROGRAMMING. The goal of his visit was to observe organization of geriatrics in France, experience daily clinical practices firsthand, and explore lessons that could be adapted to improve geriatric care in Armenia.

This mission provided invaluable insights into geriatric care and a roadmap for developing sustainable, patient-centered services in Armenia, highlighting the importance of on-site learning for building effective healthcare models.

Strengthening Geriatric Education in Armenia

🤝 Since 2024, the Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People has partnered with Erebuni Medical Academy to integrate Geriatrics into the curriculum for international medical students.

The course has been designed and introduced by Dr. Artur Torosyan, President of the AHAOP and Founder of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

His expertise has shaped the program to:
🔹 equip future doctors with essential knowledge and competencies in geriatric medicine,
🔹 foster skills required for improving health outcomes and care for older adults,
🔹 and highlight the importance of geriatrics as a vital and attractive medical specialty.

For AHAOP and AAGG, advancing geriatric education is a strategic priority. With the leadership and expertise of Dr. Torosyan, we are contributing to the professional growth of young physicians and laying the foundation for the sustainable development of geriatrics in Armenia—ultimately improving the quality of life of the ageing population.

Ծրագրի նպատակն է՝
- ապագա բժիշկներին փոխանցել տարեցների առողջապահության վերաբերյալ արդիական գիտելիքներ,
- զարգացնել մասնագիտական հմտություններ, որոնք անհրաժեշտ են տարեցների առողջության պահպանման և խնամքի որակի բարձրացման համար,
- և խթանել գերիատրիան որպես գրավիչ և հեռանկարային մասնագիտություն նոր սերնդի համար։

Ասոցիացիայի համար առաջնահերթություն է գերիատրիայի մասնագիտական կրթության տարածումը Հայաստանում, քանի որ դա ոչ միայն ներդրում է ոլորտի կայուն զարգացման գործում, այլև ուղիղ ճանապարհ տարեցների կյանքի որակի բարձրացմանը։

|Eng.,Հյ.| Opportunities for the Development of Discussed at the RA Ministry of Health

A meeting was held at the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia to discuss new opportunities for the development of geriatrics in the country.

Founder and President of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology as well as the president if the Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People Artur Torosyan, presented the programs, achievements, and future goals aimed at advancing the field. He emphasized that in recent years it has been possible to establish a favorable environment and the necessary resources for the introduction of geriatric services, while the availability of qualified specialists by the end of the year will open up new opportunities for further development. Torosyan also highlighted the need to deepen cooperation with the Ministry in the areas of policy-making, service model development, and the implementation of educational programs.

Cardiologist and board member of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Tigran Chilingaryan, shared the outcomes of his one-month study visit to the geriatric center of Montpellier University Hospital (CHU de Montpellier) in France. He spoke about the structure, procedures, and organization of services, as well as the possibilities of adapting successful practices to the Armenian context, stressing the importance of the international academic partnerships established during this visit. This unique experience was made possible through the cooperation between the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the EuGMS - European Geriatric Medicine Society, within the framework of the “Promoting Geriatrics in Countries Where It Is Still Emerging” (PROGRAMMING CA211222) project.

Head of the Department of Medical Care Policy at the Ministry of Health, Knar Ghonyan, underscored the importance of the new opportunities created for the development of geriatrics, highlighting the necessity of effective and continuous collaboration. She drew special attention to the need for enhancing the capacities of specialists working in primary healthcare centers and strengthening cooperation with the Association in this process.

Deputy Head of the Healthcare Department of Yerevan Municipality, Armine Zohrabyan, also emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation and expressed readiness to engage in joint initiatives aimed at advancing the field.

The participants of the meeting agreed on a set of practical steps that will contribute to the progress of geriatrics in Armenia and the improvement of health and quality of life for older adults.

ՀՀ առողջապահության նախարարությունում քննարկվել են գերիատրիայի զարգացման հնարավորությունները

ՀՀ Առողջապահության նախարարությունում տեղի ունեցավ հանդիպում, որի ընթացքում քննարկվեցին գերիատրիայի ոլորտի զարգացման նոր հնարավորությունները։

Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի, Տարեցների առողջության և խնամքի ապահովման ասոցիացիայի հիմնադիր-նախագահ Արթուր Թորոսյանը ներկայացրեց ոլորտի զարգացմանն ուղղված ծրագրերը, ձեռքբերումները և առաջիկա նպատակները։ Նա շեշտեց, որ վերջին տարիներին հաջողվել է ձևավորել նպաստավոր միջավայր և անհրաժեշտ ռեսուրսներ գերիատրիկ ծառայությունների ներդրման համար, իսկ տարեվերջին որակավորված մասնագետների առկայությունն արդեն իսկ նոր հնարավորություններ կբացի ոլորտի զարգացման համար։ Նա նաև ընդգծեց պետական քաղաքականությունների մշակման, ծառայությունների մոդելների ձևավորման և կրթական ծրագրերի իրականացման ոլորտներում նախարարության հետ համագործակցության խորացման անհրաժեշտությունը։

Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի խորհրդի անդամ, սրտաբան Տիգրան Չիլինգարյանը ներկայացրեց Ֆրանսիայի Մոմպելյեյի համալսարանական հիվանդանոցի գերիատրիկ կենտրոնում իր մեկամսյա փորձի ուսումնասիրման այցի արդյունքները։ Նա խոսեց ծառայությունների կառուցվածքի, ընթացակարգերի և աշխատանքի կազմակերպման, ծառայությունների հաջողված փորձը հայաստանյան իրականությանը հարմարեցնելու հնարավորությունների մասին՝ ընդգծելով միջազգային ակադեմիական գործընկերային կապերի կարևորությունը, որոնք ձեռք են բերվել այդ այցի ընթացքում։
Փորձի ուսումնասիրման այդ բացառիկ այցը հնարավոր էր դարձել Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի, Տարեցների առողջության և խնամքի ապահովման ասոցիացիայի և Եվրոպական գերիատրիկ բժշկության միության համագործակցության արդյունքում՝ «Գերիատրիայի զարգացման խթանում այն երկրներում, որոնցում այն նոր է զարգանում»(PROGRAMMING CA211222) ծրագրի շրջանակում։

ՀՀ առողջապահության նախարարության բժշկական օգնության քաղաքականության վարչության պետ Քնար Ղոնյանը կարևորեց գերիատրիայի զարգացման համար ստեղծված հնարավորությունները՝ ընդգծելով արդյունավետ և շարունակական համագործակցության անհրաժեշտությունը։ Նա առանձնահատուկ ուշադրություն դարձրեց առողջության առաջնային պահպանման կենտրոններում աշխատող մասնագետների կարողությունների զարգացմանը, այդ գործընթացում Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի հետ համագործակցության սերտացմանն ու գործնական քայլերին։

Երևանի քաղաքապետարանի աշխատակազմի առողջապահության վարչության պետի տեղակալ Արմինե Զոհրաբյանն իր հերթին ևս կարևորեց համագործակցության խորացման անհրաժեշտությունը՝ պատրաստակամություն հայտնելով համատեղ նախաձեռնությունների իրականացման գործում։

Հանդիպման մասնակիցները պայմանավորվեցին գործնական մի շարք քայլերի շուրջ, որոնք կնպաստեն գերիատրիայի առաջընթացին և Հայաստանում տարեցների առողջության ու կյանքի որակի բարելավմանը։

🤝 Այս բացառիկ այցը հնարավոր դարձավ Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի և Գերիատրիկ բժշկության եվրոպական միավորման (EuGMS) արդյունավետ համագործակցության շնորհիվ։

A Key Step Toward Building the First Geriatric Care Model in Armenia
🇦🇲 🇫🇷 Dr. Tigran Chilingaryan, board member and Head of Educational Affairs of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology, as well as a cardiologist and internist, recently completed a three-week professional visit to Montpellier University Hospital (CHU de Montpellier) in France. The purpose of the visit was to thoroughly explore the hospital's geriatric care model, applied methods, and innovative technologies.

🤝 This exceptional visit was made possible through the effective collaboration between the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology(AAGG) and the EUGMS - European Geriatric Medicine Society.

Since 2023, the AAGG has been actively involved in the EuGMS-led COST Action CA211222 under the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST - European Cooperation in Science and Technology) framework. The program, titled “Promoting Geriatric Medicine in Countries Where It Is Still Emerging” (PROGRAMMING), aims to support the development of geriatrics in countries where the specialty is in its early stages. The national sphere coordinator of the program in Armenia is the Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People (Տարեցների առողջության և խնամքի ապահովման ասոցիացիա).

💪 The knowledge and experience gained in Montpellier will serve as a foundation for establishing Armenia’s first geriatric care model and for developing modern educational programs in the field, ensuring alignment with the highest international standards. The visit also laid the groundwork for sustained collaboration between Montpellier University Hospital and the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology in clinical training, research, and educational initiatives.

🌳 Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիան, հանձին նախագահ Արթուր Թորոսյանի, ներկայացրեց Հայաստանը Եվրոպական գերիատրիկ բժշկության միավորման (EUGMS - European Geriatric Medicine Society) գլխավոր ասամբլեայի գարնանային ժողովին, որը տեղի ունեցավ Ամստերդամում։ Այս կարևոր հանդիպումն ընդգծում է Ասոցիացիայի ակտիվ ներգրավվածությունը միջազգային մասնագիտական ցանցերում՝ նպաստելով գերիատրիայի ոլորտի զարգացմանը Հայաստանում։

🔹 Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիան ակտիվորեն ներգրավված է «Խթանելով գերիատրիան երկրներում, որոնցում այն նոր է զարգանում» (PROGRAMMING) ծրագրում, որն իրականացվում է Եվրոպական գերիատրիկ բժշկության միավորման (EuGMS) կողմից՝ Գիտության և տեխնոլոգիաների ոլորտում եվրոպական համագործակցության (COST) ծրագրի ֆինանսավորմամբ։

📍 Այդ ծրագրի շրջանակներում Ասոցիացիան արդեն իրականացրել է հայ բուժաշխատողների կրթական կարիքների գնահատում, որի հիման վրա կմշակվի կրթական հատուկ ծրագիր։

📍 Միաժամանակ Ասոցիացիայի փորձագիտական խումբն աշխատում է Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպության (ԱՀԿ) «Տարեց անձանց ինտեգրված խնամքի» (ICOPE) ձեռնարկի և գնահատման գործիքների հայերեն թարգմանության և ադապտացիայի վրա։ Այս գործընթացը կարևոր քայլ է Հայաստանում տարեցների խնամքի միջազգային լավագույն փորձի ներդրման ուղղությամբ։

🤝 ԳԳՀԱ-ի և Եվրոպական գերիատրիկ բժշկության միավորման միջև ձևավորված ամուր մասնագիտական կապերը հնարավորություն են տալիս Հայաստանին ներգրավվել միջազգային նախաձեռնություններում, փոխանակել փորձն առաջատար մասնագետների հետ և մեր իրականություն բերել տարեցների առողջապահության ոլորտում արդի գիտական մոտեցումները։

🌳 The Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology (AAGG), represented by its president, Artur Torosyan, participated in the General Assembly Spring Meeting of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS), held in Amsterdam. This significant event highlights the Association’s active engagement in international professional networks, contributing to the advancement of geriatrics in Armenia.

🔹 AAGG is actively involved in the "Promoting Geriatrics in Countries Where It Is Still Emerging" (PROGRAMMING) initiative, implemented by EuGMS with funding from the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program.

📍 As part of this initiative, the Association has already conducted an assessment of the educational needs of Armenian healthcare professionals in geriatrics, which will serve as the basis for the development of a specialized training program.

📍 Simultaneously, AAGG’s expert team is working on the Armenian translation and adaptation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) "Integrated Care for Older People" (ICOPE) manual and assessment tools. This process is a crucial step toward integrating international best practices into elderly care in Armenia.

🤝 The strong professional ties between AAGG and EuGMS provide Armenia with opportunities to participate in international initiatives, exchange expertise with leading specialists, and introduce cutting-edge scientific approaches to elderly healthcare in the country.

🎯 Elen Mkhitaryan heads the Neurogeriatrics and Memory Laboratory at the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center (National Medical Research Center of the N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, under the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation). With her exceptional professional expertise and scientific achievements, she actively supports the programs of the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology, contributing to the development of geriatrics in Armenia.

համալսարան» ԲԿ ԴՊԻՈւՀ) Նեյրոգերիատրիայի և հիշողության լաբորատորիան։ Իր բացառիկ մասնագիտական փորձով և գիտական նվաճումներով նա ակտիվորեն աջակցում է Գերիատրիայի և գերոնտոլոգիայի հայկական ասոցիացիայի ծրագրերին՝ նպաստելով Հայաստանում գերիատրիայի ոլորտի զարգացմանը։
