AJOG Expert Review in Labor: The active phase of labor - Changing directional dynamics as mechanism for producing the deceleration phase
Pictorial representation of the postulated mechanism for the development of the deceleration phase. A, linear retraction of the cervix along the coronal (transverse) plane of the fetal head during the linear maximum slope of the active phase. B, as dilatation approaches the deceleration phase, the cervix “turns the corner” as it retracts cephalad (relative to the mother) along the fetal head. C, cephalad retraction continues at the same pace, but with progressively less additional increment in cervical dilatation, giving the appearance that the dilatation rate is slowing.
