I love finding interesting stories from Argentina that include historical tidbits that make genealogy so special.

I wanted to share with you a great find in genealogical records, specifically the area of Valle de Uco, el Sauce, which encompasses the towns of San Carlos, Tunuyán, and Tupungato.

Also, it's for anyone who may have family trees connected to San Rafael, Malargüe and any towns in the area located in province of Mendoza.

I found an 1810 census within the parish records of Tupungato, of a parishioner who preached all along this area of Mendoza in the 1770's upto the early 1800's, who kept some great records which included death records of military casualties of the skirmishes with the native Indians. These records have some pretty amazing details that are very interesting, especially if some of these individuals are in your family tree.

San Carlos had an important fort used to house military soldiers to combat the native tribes already inhabiting these lands.

It tells of one story in 1777, of a military Captain by the name of Joseph Zapata, who had a Ranch, called La Estancia del Sauce. And within this ranch, was the location of the Parish church of Uco.

Joseph Zapata was killed by a group of Native Indians, who rode through with horses, including inside the church, crashing down the Parish doors and sacking everything in sight. They took the keys and religious artifacts and made off with an important victory.

These records have some great information if you are researching in this area from San Rafael and Malargüe upto San Carlos And Tunuyan!

The records are found in the Tupungato Parish, they are kind of hidden and includes a lot more than just Tupungato, which maybe you wouldn't think to check there if you are investigating in other towns. This Parish includes records from the entire area. I highly recommend you take a glance at these records because it could give you valuable information to add to your family tree!

The Parish is called Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The film number in Family Search catalog is #1110414.

Argentinian Research tip ... 🇦🇷✔️
Investigating for a client, we came across a mislabeled set of documents in family search.

We found a couple of municipalities in the Buenos Aires Province, that were labeled wrong. We were looking in the Moreno, Buenos Aires 1869 census, which in Argentine research, is very important. Argentina has two main censuses, along with a few others in the 1800's, depending the area you lived in. But the most important ones are the 1869 and 1895 censuses.

As we searched through the 1869 census, I just couldn't find a family that should have been there. Maybe they relocated, maybe they moved to another city, but when the pieces ad up and common sense says they should be there, you should listen to your gut. 🤔

As I started looking at the locations a little better, I came across something that blew my mind.🤯 The Moreno, Buenos Aires Census, was mislabeled as San Miguel del Monte, or better known as just Monte. Looking through the rest of the film, I started seeing different districts of Monte in the film, realizing that I could not find what I was looking for because I was looking in the wrong town...

So, we got curious, and looked up the San Miguel del Monte 1869 census, and found that it was actually the Moreno, Buenos Aires Census! Somehow, these two censuses were mixed up, and were both labeled as the other. 🥴

After searching for the family I knew should have been there, I finally found them in the census labeled San Miguel del Monte, but was actually Moreno, Buenos Aires ...

Unfortunately these things happen, so the lesson is make sure you verify exactly what you are looking at just in case. It could save you a lot of time and energy in your research.

Keep an eye out 📜👀

These types of documents hit you pretty hard. It happens in every culture, and unfortunately was part of our history long ago when the Spaniards took over our country ...

This baptismal record states that a baby was born to a woman slave, and was only given the first name of Esteban, and his mother was not dignified to be mentioned in this record to be identified. Instead, the owner of the slave was, and therefore the child was listed under the slave owners last name of Cornejo ...

This an emotional genealogical discovery the way people were unfortunately portrayed during these times in our history. It happend a lot in Argentina where the natives were separated from the conquering spaniards and even were made slaves by those that felt like they were above the rest. This happend in one of the oldest Parishes in Buenos Aires. Nuestra Señora del Pilar.

This is also a tough genealogical discovery because we can not identify the mother and this makes it difficult to actually know 100% if this is the person we were looking for. We can always use our experience and facts found along the way to make educated guesses, but it always makes it tough to really nail it down...
