We’re proud to announce the publication of another important IDS study:
“Clinical and Dermoscopic Characteristics of Exogenous Ochronosis: Results of a Multicenter Study by the IDS Task Force on ‘Imaging in Skin of Color’”

Study included 29 patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI
All patients had malar region involvement
Mean hydroquinone use: ~16 months
Common dermoscopic findings:
• Obliteration of follicular openings (86.2%)
• Pigment dots & brown amorphous areas (72.4%)
• Telangiectasias, accentuated pigment network, comma-shaped structures, and more
Histopathology confirmed EO in 41.4% of cases, all showing classic banana bodies.

Dermoscopy proves to be a powerful tool in diagnosing exogenous ochronosis—especially in skin of color—helping clinicians recognize key features non-invasively.

Congratulations to the IDS Task Force on “Imaging in Skin of Color” for this meaningful contribution to global dermoscopy research!

New IDS Study Published

We’re excited to share the publication of the IDS study:
“Five- and Ten-Year Evolution of Longitudinal Melanonychia Appearing Before the Age of Five: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study from the International Dermoscopy Society.”

This prospective follow-up of children with congenital nail matrix nevus (CNMN) found:
✔️ No cases of subungual melanoma (SUM)
✔️ No signs of invasive or metastatic disease
✔️ Most CNMN showed initial progression in the first 5 years, followed by partial or complete regression over time

While the study has some limitations—like possible selection bias and lack of systematic biopsies—it supports a watchful waiting approach for LM appearing before age five.

Thank you to all authors who contributed to
this study.

☀️ It's summer: protect yourself from the sun and stay safe! 🕶️

As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, it’s the perfect time to remind ourselves about the importance of sun protection. 🌞

Did you know that exposure to UV rays can increase the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma? It’s crucial to stay vigilant and take steps to protect your skin. Here are some simple tips to help you stay safe under the sun:

🧴 Use Sunscreen – Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, even on cloudy days, and reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

🌞 Seek Shade – Whenever possible, stay in the shade during peak sun hours (10 AM - 4 PM), when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

👒 Wear Protective Clothing – Don’t forget to wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.

🏖️ Be Cautious with Tanning – Avoid tanning beds, and remember that even a small amount of sunburn can increase the risk of melanoma.

🚨 Check Your Skin Regularly – Examine your skin for any new or changing moles or spots, and consult a healthcare professional if you notice anything unusual.

Melanomas are serious, but with early detection and proper sun protection, we can reduce the risks and enjoy a safe and healthy summer. 🌴

Stay safe, stay protected, and let’s make this summer one to remember for all the right reasons! 🌞
