Continuous Intraoperative Hemodynamic Monitoring decreases in-hospital costs - publication by Carreon et al.

In this study Predictive Hemodynamic Monitoring (PHM) was evaluated in adults undergoing multi-level posterior thoracolumbar fusion.

>> PHM patients had less intra-operative hypotension (6.6 vs. 13.3 min) and hypertension (2.4 vs. 6.7 min).
>> Length of hospital stay was significantly shorter with PHM (4.5 vs. 7.0 days).
>> Post-operative costs were lower in the PHM group ($2,757 vs. $5,339), mainly due to reduced room & board, pharmacy, lab, and therapy expenses.
>> Surgery costs and 90-day post-discharge costs were similar between groups.
>> PHM showed a trend toward fewer complications
>> Overall, PHM could lead to ~$2,500 cost savings per case and improved hemodynamic stability during surgery.
