Do you know that you don’t know, or do you not know that you don’t know? Have you ever asked yourself this question when it comes to awareness?
Many people are unaware that they aren't fully awake in the present moment. We could call it a “sleep stage”, and as a consequence then often operate on autopilot, responding to daily events in the same predictable ways. Stress or rejection is a result of this, which is generally unpleasant for both the individual reacting and those on the receiving end.
By cultivating awareness—essentially "waking up" to each moment—we can transform really our lives. Every moment becomes rich with possibilities, and we begin to recognize that nothing is fixed; everything is in a state of flux. This heightened awareness allows us to identify opportunities as they arise.
Life unfolds as a series of moments, and situations are not inherently good or bad—they simply are. When you lead a mindful life it will show up in healthier relationships, reduce stress, and enhance overall life satisfaction.
Dr. Ellen Langer, a professor of psychology at Harvard, advocates for practices that encourage mindfulness, including:
1. Awareness of Choices: Acknowledge that there are often multiple interpretations of any situation, leading to different responses.
2. Curiosity: Cultivate a curious mindset to explore life rather than relying on assumptions or preconceived notions.
3. Engagement: Actively participate in activities, paying attention to details, and breaking away from mindless routines.
Next time, when you find yourself struggling, take a couple of breath and ask yourself: Do I know that I don’t know or do I not know that I don’t know?
You have a choice.
Namaste.
