The Griechenlandhilfe purchases charitable purposes by alleviating as far as possible unbearable conditions in the Greek social and health care system. Due to the economic crisis and the pandemic more and more Greeks are facing unemployment which often results in the loss of (social) insurance coverage and any claim on the provision of medical services. The Griechenlandhilfe aims to give support b

y regularly delivering medical goods and supplies to Greek hospitals and social practices treating persons without health insurance. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters tons of auxiliary (medical) goods have already been delivered to hospitals, childcare institutions and social facilities. Dear friends,
our team is already in Greece with the Easter delivery. For Orthodox Easter we set a goal of preparing 150 bags of sweets for children. Many friends and supporters took part in this campaign. Christl and Conny spent days distributing and packing. Now they are in Greece and with the help of the children they can unpack and see their joy. The social centers in Patras and Igoumenitsa were delivered first. Today our team was in Parapotamos in Thessaly.

Dear friends,
today we delivered masks, water, gloves and everything left in our bus from village to village.
The groundwater level is still high. It smells terrible. Everywhere you look, you see sad, dead landscape. When will the nature here ever recover?
The catastrophe has so many faces. It is difficult to forget the sad, hopeless and exhausted faces of the people and how some of them force a tired smile.
Tomorrow we're going home. But we promise, we'll come back, we won't leave the people here alone. Someone wrote: “Giving up is not an option.”

Dear friends, our team is in Thessaly again.

In September Storm “Daniel” flooded 720 square kilometers of mostly prime farmland and completely destroyed crops in central Greece. Hundreds of buildings were flooded, the backbone of the country's railways, roads and bridges were destroyed, and tens of thousands of farm animals drowned. The consequences of this disaster in one of the most productive regions of Greece will affect the entire country and, among other things, lead to rising prices and shortages of basic foods, experts estimate.

The great wave of sympathy and willingness from our friends and companions to help was overwhelming. Thanks to this support, our team was on site with the most necessary relief supplies just a few days after the flood disaster, stayed there for 4 weeks in September and returned now with lots of supplies.

40 Greccolinos and chocolate changed hands today. We received a drawing from each child as a thank you. It was good to hear children's laughter. Even if it was just for a short moment.
We delivered hygiene products, washing and cleaning products, diapers, baby food to the Parapotamos social center.
Seeing how happy the people here are just for a little help makes up for the sad thoughts and bewilderment of a desolate, dead country.

A big thank you to all the helpers, donors and supporters who are supporting the people here in extreme need and desperation!

We are aware of how work-intensive, stressful and mentally challenging the situation is for everyone. But together, and only together, we can create a little hope and relief for these people.

Dear friends,
our first visit today is to Marios. We are on his farm. We bring rubber boots, gloves, masks, disinfectants and drinking water for people and animals.
The smell is beastly. Stoic, calm, turning off your brain we go from farm to farm. Endless, vast dead land, dead animals, desperate, speechless people.
Then we drive through the village of Farkadona. We meet Spiros. Mayor of 18 villages, that all look like this. He doesn't know what to do anymore either.
People sleep outdoors, mud and water are poisoned. We bring hygiene products, gloves...
He says, canned water and food are still there. He urgently needs tons of hygiene products, detergents and cleaning products, but also school supplies for the children.

More information tomorrow. Bernd sits next to me. We have lost words and thoughts. We are sitting at the end of the day simply speechless.

meanwhile in Salzburg: the next transports are ready to depart.
Hannes took over the truckload. It will be delivered from Vienna to Athens.
Christl loaded her bus with the help of her family.
There are hygiene products, medicines, medical materials for the medical units in Thessaly.
We bought here boots, gloves, masks and disinfectants for the farmers of a small village north of Larissa.
We meet Marios today. This is one of the farmers, whose animals are rotting on the farm and who is desperately waiting for help. I'm afraid, images like these on his farm will come back to haunt us again and again.

A very heartfelt thank you to all of you, helpers, donors and to everyone, who supports the people here in their extreme need and desperation. I am aware of how work-intensive, stressful and mentally challenging the situation is for everyone. But I am convinced, that together and only together, we can create a little hope and relief for those people.

Erwin and Team on the way to the village Metamorfosi. The stench eats into the clothes, nose and mouth. They have to put on masks. What they see is cows in the mud, suffering animals, millions of mosquitoes.
Then they just went from house to house and delivered food rations, hygiene products and water. Not much more is possible now.
The farmer left the tractor at the end of the road. To get to his farm he takes a boat. The water in between is too deep even for a tractor.
Another farmer told our team through tears that this land is dead.
This region is known for cotton, wheat, milk, and cheese production. A flourishing country. Destroyed for years. Material things can be replaced, but contaminated soil cannot.

Dear friends,
our team has been in the flooded region for three days now.
We visited the Mayor of Palamas first. The ambulance is destroyed. They have set up a makeshift replacement in the basketball hall. Small room for the doctor, collection point and emergency shelter. We supply everything a medical unit needs, including surgical materials and medication.

We drove to Vlochos with the tractor. It is impossible to get off. The smelly, contaminated water remains in our clothes and on the skin. Nothing exists here anymore.
A farmer asks us, if we would like to see his home. We meet the farmer whose cows were washed onto the roof by the water. He tells us, the water came at 4:30 in the morning and 30 minutes later our lives were gone. When he got the cows off the roof days later, they died the next day.

There is a lot of work waiting for us.

Dear friends,
our team visited a children's home that is located in one of the most affected areas of Volos on Sunday. Thankfully, there is no damage there because the home is slightly higher than the other buildings.
The damage in and around Volos is enormous but at least most of the roads are already passable.
Preparations are already underway in Salzburg for the next delivery trip, which will start shortly.

Dear friends,
the summer of 2023 caused unimaginable damage in Greece. First the enormous fires, now widespread flooding in huge areas in Middle Greece. These two forces of nature have never occurred on this scale in Greece and are hitting the population hard.

Our team came to Volos yesterday to see if and how we can help.

There is at least some water and electricity here again. However, the water is contaminated because many sewer pipes were destroyed. Accordingly, the demand for drinking water is high and it is sold out in many stores.
About 200m of the main road to Pelio was completely destroyed. The power of the water was immense.
We visited an old people’s home – the garden and a side wing were torn away by the floodwaters. Thank God no one was hurt.
In the city of Volos they clean up and the water has drained away, but the mud is everywhere.
The Krafsidonas riverbed, which is normally 3.5m deep, is filled with sand and rubble up to one meter.
It will probably take a very long time until all the damage is repaired.
We were mainly asked for water, food and cleaning supplies. We will get these things locally. The rescue teams also need pumps, emergency electricity generators and boots.
We will try to support them as best we can.

Dear friends,
last weekend we were preparing our next transport in Salzburg.
Meanwhile the fire just missed our storage in Aspropyrgos. The halls in the neighborhood burned down.
Our volunteer Bernd supplied the fire brigade in Krestena with helmets, jackets, etc.
We still urgently need equipment for the fire brigades and dust masks. There is a big demand there.

Dear friends,
two more pallets of equipment for the Athens fire departments arrived last week. Part of it was taken over by the President of the Reservists Association of Peloponnese (S.E.P.), Major Giorgos Kariotis, and goes to the Corinth Volunteer Fire Brigade and their colleagues in the Peloponnese.
The second pallet, which also includes an emergency generator, is on the ferry to Naxos and goes to the local fire brigade.
Major Kariotis took this opportunity to tell us about the situation of the volunteer fire brigades - in short, a lot remains to be done... We will report on this in more detail later.

our team arrived in Athens today. We delivered school supplies and hygiene bags with toiletries for children in Glyfada. The next school year is about to start and the number of families, who cannot afford the equipment for their children, is unfortunately considerable.
Then we went to Moschato and succeeded to send the first pallet of fire brigade equipment to Naxos.

Dear friends,
on the way to Athens yesterday, we saw the damages of the devastating fires. A huge area east of Loutraki has become a scorched land. After every fire I ask myself, why one house burns down, but the next one is still standing. How does this happen?
I talk to the people. Most of them have now no electricity and no water.
A local man invites me for a coffee. Everything is burned all around. The neighboring house is burned down as well. On the right of the porch, bushes and trees are burned, on the left, everything is in bloom. I don’t understand this.
First the water in the tank started to boil, then the boiler exploded, the local man tells me. Here we deliver the first generator and groceries.

The neighbor says “My car burned down in front of the house, but the house was spared”. He points to the house next door, the fire came so quickly, the old woman couldn't make nothing. Here we donate just the essentials as well.

Thursday we'll get another donation from the fire brigade in Kematen an der Ybbs. The firefighters in Naxos, Diasella, Patras and Glyfada are already waiting for us.

A few days ago, our friend Andreas met the fire brigade commander of Naxos. The fire brigade has just returned from Rhodes. Working there was very, very difficult, especially because the equipment available was inadequate.

At the top of the firefighter’s wish list are
Respiratory masks with replaceable filters and radios to maintain the necessary communication during operations.
A big dream is a new fire engine. The existing vehicles are mostly over 30 years old and also have only low water capacities.

In general, all fire brigades with whom we are in contact need the following equipment:
Respiratory masks
safety goggles
flashlights
eye drops
burn ointment
radios
Firefighter clothing (jackets, pants, gloves, boots, helmets)

We will try to help as much as possible - please support us! 🙏🏼

our team was working in the storage yesterday. We prepared the load for the next delivery trip. More than 100 school bags, stationery and hygiene bags will be delivered to families in the beginning of the new school year.
Surgical material for the hospitals is already packed as well. We're still missing a defibrillator here.
