The WHY & HOW of core muscle activation in Dance...

I often receive the question: is pulling in the belly button different then engaging the deep core muscles? Yes, IT IS!

❔WHY❔
Activating the deep core muscles is more functional and contributes to body resilience while belly button retraction primarily results in a flatter appearance of the abdomen and does not provide a stable base in long-term benefits for stability or movement.

The deep core muscle system should be activated during movement as they provide more stability and support the spine. For dancers it is particularly important for a correct posture, alignment, stength, balance and generally improving movement sequences (e.g. lifting, running, jumping, turning) as well as preventing injuries.

❔HOW❔
This technique involves engaging the deeper muscles of the core such as the Transversus abdominis (deep layer of abdominal muscles), the pelvic floor muscles, the diaphragm and the Multifidi (stabilizing muscles along the spine).

❕So, IT IS not the belly button which makes the deep core engagement, IT IS the muscle system around. Try to use my IMAGINATION CUES in the pics to help you find your deep core muscle activation.

SMART goal setting is an essential tool for dancers, as it provides a sense of direction and purpose that can keep dancers motivated and focused on their objectives.

The beginning of a new year can be a reflection of the past but also a preview for new goals. By tracking your dance goals, you can see how far you have come and identify areas where you need to improve and adjust - for example your training habits, dance technique or selfcare accordingly.

When you, as a dancer, set your personal goals, you are making a commitment to yourself to achieve those objectives. This commitment creates a sense of accountability that can help you to stay focused and motivated.

And, last but not least, achieving a goal is a significant accomplishment, and it is essential to celebrate these successes. Celebrating achievements provides a sense of satisfaction and pride that can help you to continue working towards your objectives and trust in your abilities.

BE AWARE OF YOUR BREATHE!

Breathing, when used effectively, becomes an essential tool for dancers to improve their technique, express emotions and fully engage with their choreography.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH FOLLOWING ISSUES?

▪️I focus so hard on performing correctly that using the breath is secondary.
▪️I get corrections from my teacher that my shoulders are up.
▪️I hear from my choreographer that my dancing looks stiff or there’s no length in my movement.
▪️I lose my balance easily when it comes to a turn or jump.
▪️I am running out of breath when there is a high impact dance combination.
▪️I don't breath deeply because I don't want my belly sticking out.

ONE OF THE PROBLEM CAN BE THAT YOU ARE NOT BREATHING EFFECTIVELY...
Take a look on the pics and find out a few ways HOW BREATHING IMPACTS DANCE 👀

BENEFITS OF CONTRACT-RELEASE-TECHNIQUE

In my Dance Physio Work I try to integrate this great method to improve flexibility, contrology and the connection with movement and breathing.

In dance, "CONTRACT & RELEASE" refers to a fundamental movement training that involves two opposing actions:

CONTRACT: This phase involves tensing and shortening the muscles, creating a compact and controlled position. It often emphasizes the core and can be used to express tension or intensity.

RELEASE: In contrast, this phase involves relaxing the muscles, allowing the body to elongate and flow freely. This can convey a sense of ease and fluidity.

The interplay between these two actions offers several benefits for dancers and performers:

✔️ Improved Muscle Control: Enhances awareness and control over muscle engagement and relaxation, leading to more precise movements.

✔️ Increased Flexibility: Promotes greater range of motion by encouraging muscles to stretch and release tension effectively.

✔️ Better Coordination: Strengthens the connection between body and mind, improving proprioception and balance.

✔️ Injury Prevention: Teaches proper alignment and muscle use, reducing the risk of injury through overuse or improper technique.

✔️ Physical Awareness: Gives a deeper understanding of body mechanics and how different movements affect overall performance.

✔️ Creative Exploration: Encourages experimentation with movement quality, leading to innovative choreography and personal style development.

✔️ Enhanced Expression: Allows dancers to convey a wider range of emotions through dynamic contrasts in movement.

Incorporating these principles into training can significantly elevate a dancer's performance quality and artistic expression.

Finding BALANCE IN DANCE

Our balance is primarily coordinated by 3 systems:
1. Vestibular system: located in inner ear as a "carpenter's balance" to keep you level.
2. Motor system: uses sensory nerves called proprioceptors in muscles, tendons and joints.
3. Visual system: sends signals from eyes to brain about the current position of your body.

🗨️How to practice good balance and being able to move off-balance:

▪️strengthen your CORE: The core (torso-/mid-/lower-back muscles) refers to all muscles that connect your trunk. It doesn’t matter how strong your arms and legs are, if core muscles aren’t equally as strong. A strong core helps to control dance movements and maintain stability, especially during turns, lifts and jumps.
▪️correct your POSTURE: The stronger your core is, the better your posture will be. Proper alignment refers to correct positioning of the body parts in relation to each other to assist control of extremities and correct weight placement.
▪️understand your CENTER OF GRAVITY: Dancers need to shift their center of gravity - the point where the weight is equally distributed in all directions - to achieve balance, execute various movements such as pirouettes and avoid strain.
▪️focus your FOOTWORK: Your feet have important sensory receptors to gather infos about where you are in space. Proprioception exercises on different floor levels with weight shifts and transfers can help dancers to move on different surfaces, wear different shoes, without constantly looking at the floor.
▪️practice without MIRROR: Spend equal amounts of time dancing with and without a mirror to encourage a stronger mind-body-connection through internal sensations and cues rather than visual feedback.
▪️find your SPOT: Use your arms for counterbalance and to create momentum, while your eyes are spotting on the wall or back of the theatre to impact your balance. Just make sure you don’t spot the ground.
▪️trust your MENTAL POWER: Use mental imagery alongside physical practice to reinforce learning, enhance performance, reduce anxiety and refine your dance technique.

Thank you for an inspiring and holisitc Symposium last weekend!
Not only for active dancers and dance teachers, also for a former dancer like me, the Symposium topics has shown a wide range to connect people through art, humanity and creativity.

In countless challening discussions in which touch or contact is brought up, touch is often appointed as the necessary source of all confusion. But what if touch and touch don't have to be the cause of confusion? What if the source of confusion arises from the way touch is conveyed, communicated, observed.

🙌 As a physiotherapist specialized in dancers health prevention and rehabilitation for dance injuries, working with my hands is a big source of treatment, beside active PT

The so called ‘hands on’ or ‘manual therapy’ in the field of physiotherapy uses various handling techniques to promote healing and relieve pain.
The focus of ‘hands on’ treatment is to assess and diagnose the impact that joints and muscles have
on a condition and how these limitations can be changed through manual techniques.

Hands-on therapy is a great option for many patients who have had an accident or traumatic experience. These can be damaged nerves or tendons, burns, scars, or other common conditions such as arthritis, tennis elbow, post-surgery rehabilitation, joint position, carpal tunnel syndrome and even certain neurological conditions.

Beside these physical aspects, working with hands on can also give confidence and trust in a human body and can support the recovery process.
