The WHY & HOW of core muscle activation in Dance...

I often receive the question: is pulling in the belly button different then engaging the deep core muscles? Yes, IT IS!

❔WHY❔
Activating the deep core muscles is more functional and contributes to body resilience while belly button retraction primarily results in a flatter appearance of the abdomen and does not provide a stable base in long-term benefits for stability or movement.

The deep core muscle system should be activated during movement as they provide more stability and support the spine. For dancers it is particularly important for a correct posture, alignment, stength, balance and generally improving movement sequences (e.g. lifting, running, jumping, turning) as well as preventing injuries.

❔HOW❔
This technique involves engaging the deeper muscles of the core such as the Transversus abdominis (deep layer of abdominal muscles), the pelvic floor muscles, the diaphragm and the Multifidi (stabilizing muscles along the spine).

❕So, IT IS not the belly button which makes the deep core engagement, IT IS the muscle system around. Try to use my IMAGINATION CUES in the pics to help you find your deep core muscle activation.

Finding BALANCE IN DANCE

Our balance is primarily coordinated by 3 systems:
1. Vestibular system: located in inner ear as a "carpenter's balance" to keep you level.
2. Motor system: uses sensory nerves called proprioceptors in muscles, tendons and joints.
3. Visual system: sends signals from eyes to brain about the current position of your body.

🗨️How to practice good balance and being able to move off-balance:

▪️strengthen your CORE: The core (torso-/mid-/lower-back muscles) refers to all muscles that connect your trunk. It doesn’t matter how strong your arms and legs are, if core muscles aren’t equally as strong. A strong core helps to control dance movements and maintain stability, especially during turns, lifts and jumps.
▪️correct your POSTURE: The stronger your core is, the better your posture will be. Proper alignment refers to correct positioning of the body parts in relation to each other to assist control of extremities and correct weight placement.
▪️understand your CENTER OF GRAVITY: Dancers need to shift their center of gravity - the point where the weight is equally distributed in all directions - to achieve balance, execute various movements such as pirouettes and avoid strain.
▪️focus your FOOTWORK: Your feet have important sensory receptors to gather infos about where you are in space. Proprioception exercises on different floor levels with weight shifts and transfers can help dancers to move on different surfaces, wear different shoes, without constantly looking at the floor.
▪️practice without MIRROR: Spend equal amounts of time dancing with and without a mirror to encourage a stronger mind-body-connection through internal sensations and cues rather than visual feedback.
▪️find your SPOT: Use your arms for counterbalance and to create momentum, while your eyes are spotting on the wall or back of the theatre to impact your balance. Just make sure you don’t spot the ground.
▪️trust your MENTAL POWER: Use mental imagery alongside physical practice to reinforce learning, enhance performance, reduce anxiety and refine your dance technique.

Thank you for an inspiring and holisitc Symposium last weekend!
Not only for active dancers and dance teachers, also for a former dancer like me, the Symposium topics has shown a wide range to connect people through art, humanity and creativity.

In countless challening discussions in which touch or contact is brought up, touch is often appointed as the necessary source of all confusion. But what if touch and touch don't have to be the cause of confusion? What if the source of confusion arises from the way touch is conveyed, communicated, observed.

🙌 As a physiotherapist specialized in dancers health prevention and rehabilitation for dance injuries, working with my hands is a big source of treatment, beside active PT

The so called ‘hands on’ or ‘manual therapy’ in the field of physiotherapy uses various handling techniques to promote healing and relieve pain.
The focus of ‘hands on’ treatment is to assess and diagnose the impact that joints and muscles have
on a condition and how these limitations can be changed through manual techniques.

Hands-on therapy is a great option for many patients who have had an accident or traumatic experience. These can be damaged nerves or tendons, burns, scars, or other common conditions such as arthritis, tennis elbow, post-surgery rehabilitation, joint position, carpal tunnel syndrome and even certain neurological conditions.

Beside these physical aspects, working with hands on can also give confidence and trust in a human body and can support the recovery process.
