Engineering the next generation of total artificial hearts.

Last week, the Mock Circulatory Loop team had the opportunity to visit the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute to gain insight into their design approach and the components used in developing their systems.

Our team learned about the challenges the researchers faced during development as well as the strategies used to address them, allowing us to incorporate these ideas into our own designs. The team also received valuable constructive feedback on our own designs, along with and potential solutions to overcome our own technical hurdles.

Join us for an Intro to Ansys Workshop hosted by UNSW Bionic Heart, designed to give you a hands-on introduction to simulation tools widely used in engineering and medical device design.

This workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of electromagnetic and thermal simulations, with a focus on walking through the step-by-step process of performing electrostatic and thermal analyses on a simple model. Whether you’re new to Ansys or looking to strengthen your simulation skills, this session will provide practical insights into setting up, running, and interpreting simulation results.
You’ll gain exposure to real-world applications relevant to biomedical and engineering contexts, helping bridge the gap between theory and industry practice.

We are proud to announce that Mending Broken Hearts (MBH) is officially becoming the UNSW Bionic Heart (UBH).

This rebrand means more than a name change. It reflects the growth, dedication and ambition of a team that has continued to evolve in its mission to advance in cardiac technology. As we mature as an organisation, our identity should reflect the standard we hold ourselves to, rigorous, collaborative and purpose driven.

UBH represents a renewed commitment to innovation and excellence, as well as a future built on the strong foundation our team has worked hard to establish.

We’re recruiting for the following technical teams:
• Mechanical
• Electrical
• Software
• Biomaterials

We are looking for members that are passionate and willing to learn, including students from engineering, sciences (material, computer, etc), physics, medicine and more. Business team recruitment will also begin separate to technical team recruitment soon.

You have the choice of enrolling in 2026 as a VIP (Vertically Integrated Project) member or as extracurricular, it’s completely up to you!

We’re thrilled to share that the UNSW Mending Broken Hearts team has won 1st place at the 2025 Heart Hackathon in Vienna, Austria! 🏆🇦🇹
