⚠️Trigger warning: mention of suicidal thoughts
When did midlife become the quiet danger zone for women’s mental health?
We talk about hot flushes, restless nights, brain fog… but less about the darker side of menopause.
For some women, perimenopause and menopause come with a real increase in depression, burnout and even suicidal thoughts.
Population data shows that women’s su***de rates often peak in midlife - the very years when menopause hits.
It’s not just hormones. It’s the mix of:
- disrupted sleep and mood swings
- the invisible weight of caregiving and work stress
- and too often, being dismissed or misunderstood by health systems
Menopause can amplify what was already hard. Exhaustion, pressure, lack of confidence - all suddenly feel heavier.
Here’s what helps:
- Talking openly about mental health at midlife.
- Spotting the warning signs early.
- Seeking real tools and support - from nervous system resets to medical help.
- Remembering that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
If you’re struggling, or if someone you love feels like they can’t cope: don’t wait.
Check in. Ask the brave question. Sit with them. Connect them to professional support.
Because midlife should be a chapter of wisdom and renewal - not silent suffering.
If you’d like a short checklist for what to say and what to do (practical first steps), comment “I’m here” and I’ll send it through.
