Bye Bye Hexenschuss with TCM:

This morning I woke up with a cervical syndrome and inability to move my head. A sharp fixed pain on the neck, which I call Hexenschuss too because it‘s coming from nowhere like Lumbago.

According to TCM there is always a history and root cause. In my case, bloody Viennese wind, no scarf, open pores due to sweating, lack of blood circulation, 2 cold ice tea with Kalamansi juice.
My son and I visited the amazing Haus des Meeres yesterday where you constantly move in- and outdoors on 11 floors with rapid climate change because they have exotic creatures there.

I call this painful happenings „Demut vor dem Herrn“-issues (humility before the Lord) because they remind me as a TCM Tuina therapist to have compassion with my clients.

So, whats happening, when you have Hexenschuss, and how to treat it with TCM methods? When you sweat the pores open to get rid of extra heat and the sweat cools you down. But when cold wind invades and you have poor blood circulation in that area already, the muscle and fascia cramp to avoid more injury. Over time, the pores close again and the wind cold gets stuck in your fascia which is surrounding your muscles. The wrong approach is massage because you would push the pathogenic factor - we call it wind cold in TCM - deeper into the body.

The solution: Gua Sha to open the pores and to release the wind cold, eat/drink warm, maybe have a hot bath or red light and protect yourself with a scarf or hoody. My humility is immediately restored as well as my neck. 😉

All the best,
Monica

Young at heart: I usually don‘t post reviews from my clients, but this one I would like to share and remember. It‘s from a 80 plus gentleman who is coming once a month for an overall service. He was a teacher and a tour guide with a huge passion for dancing. He told me this morning that he‘s trying out Bachata with his partner, because his movements to the side are quite rusty.
I‘m deeply impressed by his constant lust for life, kindness and huge knowledge about the most interesting places in this world. I feel blessed being able to support him with my TCM and Tuina knowledge and meanwhile listening to his interesting stories.

Tuina massage and pregnancy

Soon to be mums shouldn‘t be afraid of a massage. Honestly, it‘s one of the best things you can do for yourself to maintain inner peace. Lots of pregnant women work and have many other responsbilities. Tension of the neck, shoulder, lower back are therefore very common. If you were used to bodywork before you got pregnant, why not treat yourself with a nice session once in a while?
If you are a bodyworker and have doubts upon pregnant ladies, ask yourself why. Some of you might heard from their school to not treat during pregnancy because of upcoming „issues“. I think that is the wrong mindset due to a lack of understanding what happens in pregnancy and perhaps - simple as that - how to set-up a proper treatment session like using soft pillows for side position, a cotton cloth to provide a little privacy. And why not using essential oils and soothing music?

Your massage techniques ALWAYS adapt to the person/constitution and on pregnant women of course very gentle. Some areas should be left out due to their strong effect: tummy, sole of feet and lower back
In Tuina as well in Shiatsu, we know a lot of acupoints which have a reflexive effect on the issue we want to address. Spleen 9 for instqnce on the inner lower leg if feet are swollen.

By the way, Taping on the lower back is very useful after the massage. Teach your clients and their partners how to apply it.

All the best,
Monica

Alles Gute,
Monica

Happy Easter and the gallbladder

Some sensitive people might feel unwell especially at the right upper abdomen, overall sluggish and have head/neck tension especially at Easter time. This comes mostly from eating too much eggs, chocolate, ham and Austrian Easter bread.

That‘s the gallbladder talking to you that it‘s Qi is stagnated and therefore sending you those signals. Quite helpful are bitter herbs, a strong ristretto and/or a long walk to support digestion. Perhaps skip dinner on that day and have a simple rice congee for breakfast the next morning. Your tummy will be very thankful.

All the best,
Monica

My personal opinion on Iced Matcha Latte

Influencing works and advertising too. It does a good job on me when I scroll around for my addiction: the perfect functional bag. I don‘t buy a new one though because it‘s silly and because I have so many „perfect bags“ already.

Coming back to the latest trends and influencing on Social Media: It‘s silly to drink Iced Matcha Latte on an empty stomach every morning. And I speak to the ladies here who have menstrual problems, ice age cold feet, Endometriosis and/or want to conceive. Seriously, skip this newest Californian trend! I tell you why from a TCM perspective:
Matcha is Green tea in powder form. Green tea
has a cooling thermal effect even if you drink it warm. Green tea is a bitter herb which is also classified as cold. The bitter taste has a sinking effect on the Qi. If you are not a baby cow, cow milk creates dampness and mucus over time. Obviously the ice is cold, but can you imagine this 3 cooling ingredients come together in one beverage and what it does to your body?

According to TCM - simple as that - cold slows down digestive fire and slows overall circulation especially in the lower parts of the body whereas heat does and works exactly on the opposite.

If you are one of those ladies with a favour for Iced Matcha Matte and have menstrual problems, ice age cold feet, Endometriosis and/or want to conceive - please see a certified TCM practitioner.

Why bodywork is a way of workout:

I call myself a lucky person because I‘m able to follow my path, working fulltime as a TCM Tuina therapist. Since 10 years I run my own micro business as bodyworker. It was hard though in the beginning as for everyone who is self employed AND have a family. Without support from others, your closest ones and your spiritual tribe, it wouldn‘t be possible. A personal secret is: Constant learning and applying new knowledge for the sake of helping others not for a diploma on your wall, is real compassion and wisdom as my teachers always say and the money comes on it‘s own. Marketing wise I do what‘s needed (website, social media), but the real advertising is someone who felt better and tells someone else.

10 years ago no one knew Tuina - and is still newmansland for the most, because for many, TCM is known for Acupuncture. My goal was and still is - I‘m gonna change that! That‘s why I encourage people to study TCM and Tuina, because the more we are, the better and it keeps the art alive.

To come back to my headline: Tuina is a wholesome bodywork like every kind of manual therapy if done with passion and with heart for the art.

The techniques in Tuina are very dynamic-rhythmic and at the same time you connect with your clients and work according to their issues, which makes is therapeutical too. With correct posture and a healthy TCM orientated lifestyle one may manage up to 20-25 clients per week. Actually there‘s no need for extra sports, just learning how to rest and do nothing.

Stay relaxed,
Monica

Spring issues in TCM: This week my practice is full of people with pain for „unspecific western reasons“ in the lower back, the head and neck. The season has changed to spring and we feel the change too, don‘t we. According to TCM it’s the energy of the wood element, which is rising and this happens also in us.
Some with accumulated damp heat from winter and Qi stagnation (from sitting and emotions) suffer from headache and probably outburst depending on their constitution and stress level. This type of person will benefit from Gua Sha (scraping) and Ba Guan (cupping) to open the meridians and get rid of the heat. Diet and lifestyle changes need to be mentioned too: avoid coffee, black tea, spicy and greasy food. Eat mung bean, green tea and drink hot water with chrysanthemum blossoms and Chinese red dates to balance the symptomps. Rest well, moderate sports, dancing and creative work will do a good job on those people.

Get well soon,
Monica

Gute Besserung,
Monica

Some kids who are always in their head (school, hobbies, puberty) and growing like mad, might have a benefit from moxibustion. This one here, my son, lacks in earth energy (digestion) and Wei Qi (Yang Qi of the kidneys, immunsystem). That‘s why we use the power and warmth of the fire element to nourish the earth element according to Wu Xing (5 element theory of TCM) and stimulate the acupoints Ren 12, Sp 3, Ki 1 and Ki 3. That helps to keep him grounded and focussed.

My mother had surgery on her left knee last year (meniscus). It was a minor procedure without complications. However, she is currently unable to straighten her leg due to slight swelling. It only hurts after prolonged activity; rest improves her condition. First, Tuina massage is used to open up the sinew channels of the entire leg so that qi, blood and lymph can flow freely. Then the acupuncture points – marked in blue – Mi 9, the knee eyes (Ma 34 and medial Xiyan) and Mi 10 are stimulated with Qia Fa and moxibustion is applied at the same time. Afterwards, she feels immediate improvement and lightness. Unfortunately, she has to give up her beloved iced matcha soy latte as long as she has symptoms. This drink cools extremly the stomach and kidneys, which impairs the circulation of qi, blood and lymph. From a TCM perspective, the knees are energetically supplied by these two organs on the frontal side.

•••
