Report from Brussels: Strengthening European Collaboration for Community Pharmacists

In recent days, several important international meetings took place in Brussels, placing the future of employed community pharmacists high on the European agenda.

During a constructive exchange between the European Association of Employed Community Pharmacists in Europe (EPhEU) and the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and identifying shared priorities for the profession. Mr. Jan Willem Goudriaan, General Secretary of EPSU, together with Mr. Adam Rogalewski from the EPSU Health Committee, met with the EPhEU Board to explore concrete opportunities for collaboration.

The dialogue was open, forward-looking, and highly promising. Both organisations expressed a strong commitment to closer and more structured cooperation, particularly in areas such as workforce sustainability, professional recognition, working conditions, and the evolving role of community pharmacists within European health systems. In a time of digital transformation, workforce shortages, and increasing patient expectations, unified European representation is more important than ever.

In addition, the EPhEU Board meeting was held, where the Board reviewed current advocacy efforts, discussed policy developments at the EU level, and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the voice of employed community pharmacists across Europe.

For community pharmacists across Europe, these meetings send a clear and encouraging message: your work matters, your voice is being represented, and your professional future is being actively shaped at the European level.

Dialogue, solidarity, and a shared vision shape the future of community pharmacy in Europe, and Brussels has demonstrated our collective progress.

EPhEU Executive Board Update

Today, the Executive Board of EPhEU held its regular meeting, during which we defined our key priorities and activities for the upcoming year.

We are starting the year actively, with the first round of meetings in Brussels—engaging with relevant stakeholders in the European Parliament on essential topics related to community pharmacy. In April, we will hold our Annual General Assembly, followed by important updates to our internal protocols and regulations.

A major highlight of the year will be the 1st EPhEU International Conference, taking place in Zagreb, bringing together pharmacy professionals from across Europe. We will also participate in the WHO Assembly, ensuring that the voice of employed community pharmacists remains strong at the global level. And this is only the beginning—many more initiatives and activities lie ahead.

Stay connected with us and join our efforts to strengthen the future of community pharmacy across Europe.

🇭🇷 Croatia has officially declared 2025 as the Year of Pharmacy!

We are proud to share this important milestone from Croatia, recognizing the vital role of pharmacists in public health and the healthcare system.

The declaration coincides with several significant anniversaries for the Croatian pharmacy profession:
🔹 30th anniversary of the Croatian Chamber of Pharmacists
🔹 100 years since the establishment of the first Pharmacy Chamber on Croatian territory (Kingdom of SHS)
🔹 120th anniversary of the Croatian Pharmaceutical Society
🔹 130 years since the enactment of the first Pharmacy Law

Throughout 2025, a series of national events will take place under the patronage of the Croatian Parliament, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Croatian Health Insurance Fund, Croatian Institute of Public Health, academic institutions, professional societies, and international partners.

The Year of Pharmacy is both a symbolic and practical step toward further recognition of pharmacists as essential healthcare providers. In Croatia, over 4,500 pharmacists work in community and hospital pharmacies, academia, and healthcare institutions, making pharmacy one of the most accessible and impactful professions in healthcare.

We warmly invite our colleagues across Europe to follow these activities and celebrate this achievement with us.

EPhEU (European Association of Employed Community Pharmacists in Europe)

EPhEU (European Association of Employed Community Pharmacists in Europe) is the first European-wide organisation representing the interests of employed community pharmacists.

For national professional associations in member states of the European Union, it has become absolutely necessary to look across their national borders: for organisations representing the interests of employed community pharmacists, the European fundamental principles for regulations on working time, for studying pharmacy and for continuing professional development of pharmacists are as important, as the regulations about the freedom of establishment, the recognition of the professional qualification and those about distance selling.

Founded in 2012 (1st General Assembly on 30th June 2012), EPhEU will help the cross-border cooperation of national organisations representing employed community pharmacists. The exchange of information and experiences shall be intensified at periodical international meetings, to give a better response to subjects like mobility, working time directive and on-call-time, formation and continuing professional qualification of pharmacists.
