IR has been an increasingly important sub-specialty of radiology, contributing to some of the most significant medical developments. Interventional Radiologists invented angioplasty and the first catheter-delivered stent, first used in the legs to save patients with vascular disease from amputation or other surgical procedures. These advancements pioneered the state-of-the-art treatments that are commonplace today.
